The loss isn't all to consider. The gearing of the 5spd tranny is more aggressive than the 4spd auto. 5spds also have the added benefit of being able to redline every gear whereas not all autos will redline (mine does )

my stock GXE 97 seems to redline if i floor it every gear but I have no experience racing unfortunately... no times or anything to share - its used i just got it, 114000 miles - not quite sure what i should do first to help her out

Kevlo really knows his ****, so if he says that some auto's will redline while in drive & some will not then I'd take his word on it. I'm sure everyone here has owned or knows somebody that has owned a "Factory Freak". But my experience with my Maxima equipt with a automatic transmissions requires me to manuelly shift the vehicle if I want to achieve redline in each gear. If I leave it in drive & go WOT the transmission shifts about 2 or 3 hundred RPM's before redline. And you will never reach redline in 4th gear if you don't manuelly shift the vehicle from 3rd to 4th. The gearing in the automagic is way to tall. As a matter of fact I think it would be impossible to redline the final gear (4th) without some serious additional hp. Some people have said if the engine produced enough power to be able to redline 4th gear in a automagic that the top speed would be nearing 175 to 180mph. That should give you some insight on how tall the gearing in the transmission is.

I am another person with experience in both areas of maximas. My family inherited an '97 auto GLE, and I just recently bought a '96 Maxima SE. Beside the obvious suspension differences (which doesn't really seem relevant right now...), the difference in the engine feel will shock you if you drive a 5 spd. It feels like a totally different car. I have floored the auto, which brought it to about 6k, and then the shift would be sooo damn slow that I didn't even feel like pushing it anymore. Without flooring my manual, or redlining it for that matter, my car is significantly faster. Just my experience, and I do beleive those times. At least in my GLE, the first to second gear shifts are HORRIBLY slow.

The GXE/GLE's are speed limited IIRC, not rev-limited. I think all of the autos will hit 6550rpm if you shift manually. I've never heard of any 4th gen being rev-limited to 6k when redline is at 6550. It shifts at 6k automatically, but that doesn't mean it won't go higher. Shift automanually.

to my experience, the gxe 95-96 can do 60 in 6.5 sec. and the auto does it in 7.1 sec. but 97-99 does it in 7.4 sec.
since i wanted to keep my auto i added a high stall TC and will get a VB Mod and tranny cooler.
I am even with a 5 speed now (same mods) but after every shift i pull very little on him.

my auto can redline 1st and 2nd gear in D if i go WOT. but 3rd gear seems to long for it to actually reach redline, although i can get very close. i also dont have speed limiter, ive been up to 130 something before i chickened out. those 0-60 times seem a lil to low, i never heard of a 4th gen stick getting into 6 second area stock. i remembrer seeing it in 7.1-7.2 area and auto was like 7.4-7.6. i could be wrong but that 6.6 just seems way to quick for stock.

OK, here it is, Car and Driver, June 1994 full road test of the new 1995 Maxima SE 5-speed: 0-60 in 6.7 and the 1/4 mile in 15.3. I also remember Motor Trend getting 6.6 0-60. The auto's (mine) do 0-60 pretty darn close to 8 seconds.

I wish our 5 speeds had the tall 5th gear to match the OD of the auto trans! We would get even better gas mileage, I notice that at 70 mph my Girlfriends 95 SE AT is turning like 2250 rpms where as my 96 SE 5 speed is doing like over 2500 RPM's I think. I just wonder how much an SE with 5 speed fully loaded with ABS, bose, leather, moonroof, dual power seats, weighs compared to a plain GXE 5 speed?

I know that most SE auto's will redline when you floor it in D. I know for a fact that most GXE's and GLE's will shift at 6000 when you floor in it D. You have to manually shift for it to go to 6550. I believe the GLE's and SE's have different TCM's.
I think in C&D, when htey tested the 95maxima, they got 6.5sec 0-60
Also auto's will do 7.2

My 98 se 5 speed beat a 01 boxter type s up to 90 mph by half a length. This guy was a stick. Their 0-60 time is 6 flat. I don't know what kind of driver he is though, we only raced once. I have a JWT intake, Straight through style muffler, eibachs, pacesetter sts, and 18's. @60mph we were pretty close. I was barely ahead of him. I can see the 5 speeds 0-60 being close to a 6.5. That is very believable.

Are you supposed to take your foot off the accelerator for the split second when you shift?

Just floor it, best time you gonna get. My 97 GXE auto redlines 1, 2, and 3 gear. I sometimes get scared when it hits 6500 that it's gonna go over and burn something but it never does. I tend to think the autos will run 0-60 in the mid to high 7, I doubt it any will go very low 7, but that's just me.

That's the gross vehicle weight, not the curb weight.
Base weight on 5spds is around 3000-3010 lbs
Base weight on autos is around 3060 lbs
Add 100lbs when going from a base to a fully loaded model due to power seats, moonroof, bose woofer, leather, etc. So my 99SE fully loaded 5spd is probably about 3100 lbs. The 97-99's were about 10 lbs heavier with the same equipment than 95-96's due to reinforced bumpers and better crash protection.
