Brakes squeal when braking lightly
I got new brakes around november because they were worn out and always making noises. well when i got the new ones put in it still squeals when i am braking lightly. this is very annoying to me and i am sure other people as well. i dont know what kind of brake pads the shop put on. what brake pads are quiet and offer good stopping power?

Original Nissan pads have always worked well for most people (not the key-value line, but the better ones).
Others in the group have had good success with the Raybestos QuietStop pads...
Can't go wrong with original replacements from Nissan (60bucks or so).

try jrnissanparst.com - use the "maxima" discount code.. you'll be searching a long time to find better prices than that for original nissan parts... should be 50-60 bucks for the front set.

Whats up Cool.
I am a brake mechanic and might be able to help you. First off is it a constant squeak or only when you hit the brakes. If it is constant, you may have bent the backing plate. It could be touching the rotor. If it is, simply bend it back. If it squeaks when you hit the brakes, it may be the type of pad. If you are using a semi-metalic pad, it will make noise because those pads have metal in them. Try a ceramic pad. These pads guarantee no noise or brake dust. I have them on my 96 Max. They cost a little more but its worth it. Dont be cheap on brakes. Hope I helped.

its not a constant squak just usually happens when i hit the brakes lightly. when i really step on the brakes harder there is no sound. also, sometimes when i first start going there is a constant squeaking sound but it goes away after awhile.

It could also be a "sticking" caliper. I just got new pads in the front like 5 or 6 months ago and I know mine are squeaking due to a caliper (or 2) sticking.
The sticking calipers are causing the annoying squeaking for me and dragging the brakes a little. The brake drag gives me bad MPG in the city since I'm braking constantly, but I get great mileage on the highway (little braking).

you might also want to look into picking some anti-squeal gel, i think "brake quiet" is the brand name. the stuff strings suggested is also possible but you might be able to get off cheaper than buying new pads.
