New tires -> less miles :(

Went from 215/55R16 to 235/45R17 and my mileage just dropped about 75-80 miles per tank

Is it suppose to be that bad?

You would lose some, though that is a lot. How many tanks have you identified this over?

Going to heaveier wheels and larger wheels will cause you to loose gas milage. Improper balance or inflation will cause this too.

tire compounds switching from 215 > 235 (touring tires to performance tires)
I like Prophecy's explaination tho... more mass farther from the axis. Need more tq to get things moving, more hp to keep them moving. (is that right?)

It's a combination of prob much heavier wheels and tires. Do you have chrome rims now? If you felt the car being sluggish the first day you put on the new rims and tires on, it has to be a big weight difference and therefore big mileage drop.
