Idler pully squealing
Idler pully squealing
After I changed my Alternator I have a squeal. Its not the belt, its the pully. It squeals when I first start it and then randomly after that, and sometimes not at all. For some reason my brother loosened the bolt up too much and the pully came off. Could I have put it back on wrong, and If not, is there a way to stop the squeal?
I am having the same squeal on my 96 GLE. It is there sometimes then will go away if i rev up past 2000rpm. I replaced the altenator thinking it was that, replaced all belts, and even replaced the idler pulley bearing and the noise stayed. I believe it is still the idler pulley and bought the whole pully from the dealer yesterday, it ran me $70 and I plan on installing it today to see if it fixes the problem.
Bump, mainly cause I am having the same issue, and the noise seems to be getting worse. However my noise is constant. So if you guys figure out I would really like to hear what the solution was. Quick question though, does noise kinda sound like a turbo?
tighten the belt for regular squeal, i just replaced my alternator and mine will squeak wile its cranking ans for 2 second after it start, then it's gone and doesnt come back, im just going to tighten it a bit more.
My belt is tight. It doesn't get much tighter. Mine happens after start up, sometimes when I'm taking off from a stop, when I run A/C, Defrost, ect. I'll tighten it up some more and see what I get.
if any of the pulleys got oil on them at some point that can cause the belt to slip and squeel, even after replacing the belt. if you replace the belt give the pulleys a quick wipe with brake clearner.
if you reassembled the idler pulley wrong so it couldn't spin free the belt would burn up fast. Too much tension is not good for the bearings in the head of the AC compressor and alternator either....I think you have grease/oil on the pulley. Don't forget there is also a Power Steering belt with a separate tensioner...thats a fun one to work on...not.
good luck....JB

Since I replaced my idler pulley the noise I was experiencing stoped. It was a fast job, just get the assembly from the dealer for $70 and one bolt holds it in tighten the belt and your done. The bearing in my old idler was just replaced however we felt it and it was deff. what was causing the noise.
