jerky shifting & squealy belt
My daughter just got her first car, 97 Maxima SE...glides like butter. The only issues other than some body blemishes are it shifts smooth most of the time but occassionally you'll feel it tug. Also when starting the car the belt will squeel breifly or when activating the A/C.

It sounds to me like you may want to either tighten her belt or you may have to have the belt replaced. I am not a mechanic, but I have had that problem in the past with other cars of mine and sometimes all you need to do is tighten the belt. Worst case scenario, I think, may be to replace the belt.
Hope this helped.
PS. Your daughter is one lucky girl to have a 97 max se for her first car! Hope she is nice to you dad!

the A/C Alternator belt is the easier to replace of the two. I think most oil change places are capable of doing it. that belt is generally around $22 for a name brand like dayco or gates.
the maxima tranny has its off days, but is overall very good. A full fluid exchange will cure most woes....most of us here will recommend switching to Mobil, Amsoil or Redline sythetic. I have switched two of my max's and one friends to syhtetic and it does a great job of softening the harshness. If you are capable of changing the belt as mentioned above this job is no more difficult...probably less.
good luck,
JB
