is my y-pipe bad?

i noticed this noise today when i start accelereting in 1,2, and 3 gears. i looked at my exaust and found that flex section of y-pipe is broken. could this be the cause? How is it possible to fix that flex?

Thanks

you can do this a couple of ways. 1)-remove the y & ship it to warpspeed for their repair or 2)-have it done by a local exhaust shop. oh yeah, the broken flex can cause noise, to be sure get under the car and check while it's running.

Buy a 2ply or 3ply flex off ebay for shipped and pay 20 to get it welded on. It will be much quieter than it ever was.

the y-pipe is cattman by the way.

it is kinda strange, when i accelerate in natural, i don't hear the noise. it only comes when i'm in gears.

Go under hte car, and measure the Cattman flex, get same size or bigger. I would try to stay with the same size, but you can make a longer one fit w/o any probs. Any warrenty left on hte pipe?

you can try using some exhaust wrap and wrap around ur flex section. i chosed Design Engineering Inc. (DEI) Exhaust Wrap cuz it has good reputation. other functions like reducing "bees-in-the-can" sound + cooling down the exhaust section may help as well.

Exhaust wrap traps in moisture so it makes the flex rust even faster. A 2ply or 3ply flex gets rid of most noises.

Remeber he already has a Cattman Ypipe, which is suppose to be hte quietest one so he prob doesn't know about the noises of a y-pipe.

ok. went to the shop today, and even though the flex section looks like it's about to fall off, the mechanic said it's the bad muffler. it is kinda rusted, but no holes in there. the other thing that they could not understand: is why i only get the noise in gears and not in nautral. is there such a thing as a bad muffler, without holes?

If you are in gear, there would be more engine movement when you revved the engine. If you are not in gear, then the only thing turning the motor is the rotation of the flywheel/pressure plate and the crank. In gear there is resistance that will cause a greater rotation of the entire engine and consequently a bigger wrench on the flex section = bigger gap/holes for noise.

If it is your muffler - then that blows that theory out of the water. The inside of your muffler would have to be pretty screwed up to make a lot of noise and it wouldn't be that noticeably different in gear or out of gear.

If there is a passage in your flex-section that allows exhaust gasses to escape than I would guarantee that is where the noise is coming from and I would revert to my original theory on in gear vs out of gear noises.

Just remember, that you don’t even have to have a clean criminal record to work in some exhaust shops… so take what they are telling you with a grain of salt.

the muffler does make a noise, but it's actually pretty nice and doesn't really bother me. and yeah, thanks for explaining this. then i suppose there IS a leak in flex section. well, since this all doesn't hurt the performance and doesn't really cause any damage to enviorment, i guess i'll just wait till larger problem pops up.

just for the record: the noise from the muffler comes on when rmps fall down from mild to hard acceleration. and the other noise (flex) comes on during acceleration from 2k-3k rmp range for a short period of time.

turns out to be the muffler. there is a hole, but most rattling comes from rusted shield. gonna need new mufler someday, probably stock.
