ugh, i hate my tranny

Last summer, I had my tranny rebuilt because my differential bearings went back. At the same time, I had 3rd and 4th gear replaced. The shop must have done a ****ty job because 9 months later, i noticed the tranny starting to leak....

I don't hear the bearings whining in gear, but I can only hope...

warranty expired too when I hit 12k miles. so frustrating!

IF, sometime down the road, my tranny does start crapping out me, I can swap in a 5th gen tranny in, without much modification, right? I want to avoid 4th gen trannies now

On my 5th gen tranny........(auto) the only thing different is one set of 6 wires that we soldered the 4th gen harness to.

i didn't mess up a tranny in 12k miles. If you look up the differential bearings problem on the 5-spds, you'd know what I'm talking about.

But seriously, i'm glad to know that the 5th gen 5-spd will bolt up. Thanks guys, i'll end up doing that for sure if this thing craps out on me... or just sell the car.

Nadir.....dont get too excited YET. The member luckee2behere has a 97....and he put a 5spd 5th gen in his....but he had to get 5th axles. I however didnt have to....4th gen axles slid right in. So...be careful on that.

Actually, everyone thought you had to get hte 5th gen axles, but there a few people running 4th gen axles with the 5th gen tranny.

I'm in the process of doing this now. We would have been done today, but the damn dealer didn't tell me I'd need another gasket when I bought the rear main seal to replace mine that was leaking. Here's a thread I started and it answered all the questions I had http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=325741.

they prolly didn't seal the bellhousing to the tranny case right or something. Check where you are leaking from. Put some die into the motor and see maybe you are leaking from rear main seal. Also check your axle seals on the tranny. It will really suck if you tranny seizes up on you and sends you spinning. At least refill it.

i hate my tranny too. got it rebuilt like 4 months ago and its giving me a hard time.
the shifter does not go back to the middle.
its really hard getting it from 2nd gear to 3rd. i just had to get used to it.
and plus, sometimes, when going over a speedbump on 1st gear, i would slow down, and still hold it in 1st with my clutch all the way down, and when i try to take off again, i notice that it had popped out of first. i hate my tranny!!!

No need to worry just yet, unless the leaking is really bad. Do you know where it is leaking? Even if it is leaking a bit around the drive shaft seals, that doesn't mean the diffy bearings are bad, especially if you don't have any gear whine. It's normal for seals to leak a little bit over time, no seal on an engine is absolutely perfect.

Nadir, I have the same fear as you. No leaking for me yet and it's been 16K miles since the rebuild. Reading motorvate site always get me thinking that the shop I used may not have fixed the problem but just replaced the shims with the same size they took out. As much as I explained the problem to them, who knows if they did it right. Only time will tell.

I had bad bearings for a long, long time and did not get the whine. Well, maybe a tad at the very end but it was hardly noticeable.

I'm pretty sure that if you get the 2k1 LSD trans you'll need a new axle or new axles.

if you get hte LSD one you have to get the passenger side axle. Regular tranny you don't need axles.
