ECU screw missing - 99 max
hey all...
i just redid my entire exhaust this weekend and went to reset my ECU so my max could know how easier she could breathe and the screw was missing!
i've checked my codes before but last time i did it i know there wasnt a screw directly in the front of the ecu like i've seen in pictures. before i had to go about an inch in to turn it but now a screw driver goes handle deep in the ecu and i cant do anything.
I'm going to run to AutoZone and have them reset it for me but i'd like to fix this so i can check codes etc on my own.
Anyone have any ideas or know any write ups of how to get the ecu out of the dash and take it apart to reset the screw and bracket?
Thanks guys!
Dan

You do not have to reset your ECU after a mod. Your ECU is constantly learning and making adjustments to make your engine run at top performance.
Resetting only clears stored error codes! (clears the CEL) It does not change or reset any stored engine operating parameters. That fact can be found in the service manual.
FYI on 99 model cars, the screw is set back a bit. It's in there, a very small phillips head screwdriver does the job.

That screw is easy to break. I broke mine. It does not effect how the car runs, you just can't check cand clear codes. I found a cheap code reader on Ebay for $50. It checks and clears codes and a lot easier then turning the screw and counting blinks.

the screw shouldn't be missing...you probably used too large of a screwdriver last time you reset your ECU and pushed it down or to the side so you can't see it through the little hole.
pull out your ECU
take the cover off the ECU
then you can CAREFULLY push it back into place so you can see it from the little hole and then it will be lined up so you can reset your ECU in the future.
take your time and be careful
