Question about ECU's 95-99
Question about ECU (computer ) on 1997 gxe 5speed...
Or question really is I have a 1997 gxe 5 speed what years can I replace with??? Is it only 97-99??? or does it have to be strictly a 97 5 speed. Also why does it matter 5Speed or Automatic ECU (computer). They installed a automatic ECU and its making my revs bouncy still runs but shaky and bouncy???
Thanks...

You can use any 95-98 ECU in any 95-98 maxima. Some will get SES lights while others won't but they will all run. Only 95-96's can be reprogrammed at this time, so 97-98 ppl need to buy a 95-96 ECU to be reflashed by TS or JWT. I believe some 99s with some wires swapped can also use the 95-96 ECU as well.
I know you can install an auto ecu in a manual car and you may have some extra codes, but I am not sure about installing a manual ecu in a auto car. There is a much larger supply of auto ecus anyway.

i have been trying the 96 ecu in a 99 and im not having any luck. even with the wires swapped.
Yeah I was not sure about that one. I think the 99.5's may have a 5th gen ecu maybe. I am not really sure. I just remember that someone saying that with a few wires that at least SOME of the 99s could use a 95/96 ecu. Maybe once TS comes out with 00-01 ECU you may be in luck. I will search around for the thread talking about the wires to swap. I think JWT may be able to work around the 99 differences as well and make it work. Call JWT, they may know more.

JWT supposedly can get a 95-96 ECU to work with a 99.

Be aware of the Service Bullentin it happened to my 97 the water backed up in the A/c tube and water started coming inside and wet the ECU and it went crazy till it didnt start the car anymore. Their is bullentin that the underneath the wipers leaves & dirt gets caught in there and clogs up where the condensation came inside the car. Sucks bigtime....

Yes, but you have said the security light stays on when you are turning on hte car which means the immobilizer system is activated, it wouldn;t hurt to try and dissconnect it.
I have unplugged the gray connector on the ECU. do you folks know how to pop off the white plastic box? i need to open it.
