A/C Filter

How hard is this to replace? Anyone ever do this themselves? Mine smells like mildew really bad....plus I had a cat pee on my windshield and now it smells like that
I'd like to save a little money and not take it to a dealer if I can avoid it. How much does this part cost on average?

Thanks
Sarah

this is not coming from personal experience (i didn't have the privilege of having a cat pee on my windshield) but i read somewhere on this site that if you empty a can of lysol into the air intakes for the A/C while running it on max it should get rid of the mold that built up in the A/C and will get rid of the smells. your car will smell like lysol for a while though which is why that same guy recommended driving around on the highway with the windows down and the A/C blowing for a while to get the smell out.
again, i never tried this cause i never needed to but if you're going to change the filter anyway, you might as well try this first right? lysol is definitely cheaper and who knows, it might work. and if you do it, you have to keep switching the vents that you're using so that the lysol-filled air goes through all the passageways.
hope this helps and if you decide to do this, let me know what happens

I have heard of doing this also...just forgot about it temporarily..thanks for bringing it to my attention again. Think I would have to use a whole can? Thats an awful lot of lysol....

If I do try this I will advise of the results.

I would still like to know the involvement of changing the filter if any one has any ideas.

Thanks

The 4th gens don't have a "filter" like the fifth gens, although it is possible to retro fit one in. As for the Lysol approach, try it out, it does help out alot. And try not to keep your A/C on recirculate, that helps the mildew grow.

YEa its in the FAQ's... I've done it. Just put the blower on HIGH and spray the can on the intake part under the windshield and let it suck it up. It'll be smellling a whole lot better.
