Why is 1995 so fast?
From what I have read on the internet the average 1995 Maxima SE 5 speed does 0-60 in about 6.6sec. and the 1/4 mile in about 15.2secs. My dad has the 3.5L 2002 Maxima SE auto and it does about the same numbers probably a little slower from 0-60. My question is how can the 3.0L 1995 Maxima making about 190HP keep up and possibly beat the 3.5L 2002 Maxima making 255HP? I know one is a manual and one is an auto which could make a difference but its not enough to make up 65HP. Do the cars weigh that much different? Also if anyone has driven both could you tell which one had more low, middle, and high end power or did they feel about the same?

Weight differences, and I've also heard some people talk about more emmisions restrictions, but they (VQ) are rated at 190hp from 95-99, but for some reason the 95 seems to be faster.
Could be:::
Wheels, 15's vs. 16's and some minor body weight differences.

6.6 is pretty impressive for a 4th gen (talk about beatin' on your car). Sure, 4th gens have a weight advantage - but I'd guess the biggest factor is traction. I've driven tons of 5th and 6th gens (ahh, the benefits of being a valet) and is usually seems like there's simply too much power to get it all down in first gear. I'd compare it to, say, a 1.8T VW GTI, which struggle to put the boost to use in first gear.
In my experience, 5th gens whoop up on my 98 SE 5-speed, and the difference is VERY evident by the time you're finishing second gear and heading through third. Just my two cents ...

It has to do with Rim size, tire size, the driver itself, but mostly it goes by wheel & tire size. The 95 Maxima uses 15 inch wheels. Where as a 2k2 uses 17 inch wheels. smaller the faster you accelerate. Under shop talk and reading room there is an articale. When the module is up you'll be able to read it. Very interesting

6.6 0-60mph is not all that impressive for a maxima.
Mine is quicker than that.
I did the quarter mile in 15.1 and there are plenty faster than me.
I know a guy that did 14.78 stock with a 5spd like mine.
Anyway, if the 3.5 is driven correctly, it should beat the 4th gen...if they are modded the same.
However, the rating of the 190hp is clearly underrated based on how the car moves in reality. Wouldn't you say so?

If this is true, answer me this: Stillen offers two models for their 4th gen supercharger. One is for 95-98, the other is for only the 99. Isn't the introduction of OBDII the reason for this?

gawd, so much misinformation on the 4th gen forum.
1st: 1996 was the first year of mandatory obd-ii compliance in north america. This does not mean manufacturers couldn't introduce the standard earlier. Thus:
2nd: 1995 Maximas are obd-ii. Thus:
3rd: my Autotap obd-ii scanner works just fine...

The ignorance in this thread is staggering.
Take a look at timeslips that have been posted. The fastest 4th Gens around, by actual numbers, are 1997 models.
I have personally witnessed a 2k2 GLE (automatic, duh) run 14.3 with half a tank of gas, intkae and cat back. You'll never see a 4th gen with similar mods come anywhere near that.
1995s are NOT faster in general, everyone needs to get this BS out of their heads.

reading HAYNES now, and it's says '95 & later are equipped with OBD-ll system. although i have been told at autozone that it didn't have it, I found the obd-ll connector and got codes and reset ecu through it.

mzmtg do you have any numbers from a stock 5.5 gen. auto?

Well strip me naked and call me hung ... I was told by a Stillen employee (for god's sake) that the 2 s/c models were due to the addition of OBDII in 1999!!! I figured his word was trustworthy .... maybe the fcukin UPS guy picked up the phone that day.

Back in the early days, there was a white 96 5spd JWT chip, POP and other misc stuff and he ran a 14.3, with the timeslip, and shortly after he bought a Black 2k or 2k1. And another, not stock of course black '97 ran the same, 14.3, with a video of it. This is the guy that did the Audi headlights later on. Keep in mind these aren't stock #'s
The website for the white 96 was how I got introduced to the org. Some guy shared a website for his integra and max, it was integr.vtec.net/geeser/maxima some shyt like that.
Those are the olny 2 at the time that ran low 14's w/o a VI. And there was that controversial guy that had a Rosewood 96 and did some "mods" to it that was running a 14.2 or so at the time, but never had timeslips to prove it.

I think all the 4th gens are all comparable. I don't think anyone has shown one being faster than another although you can make an argument for it. And I believe Dave B put to rest that ALL MY1995 Maxima's are OBDII... finding out that one of the earliest made (in 1994) was OBDII. My 1995 Max is definitely OBDII.

Ha!
Neat, good for all of you who have OBDII 95's .. I have a 95 which is ABSOLUTELY NOT OBDII.
But if anyone wants to argue, it doesn't matter because I won't be able to convince you anyways (since you already know you are right)
Btw if anyone has an OBDII scanner and would like to try it on my car, humor me, because I've tried many of them.
Oh and I have personally read in OBDII manuals that many cars didn't adapt it until 1996. I/E If you goto Autozone and look it up in their OBDII manual, it will say Nissan Maxima 1996 up
But I'm sure someone is going to tell me that I don't know my car or that I'm dumb, so go ahead.

all 95's are OBD II, if you look you can't find the obd II plug anywhere but it's underneath the glow box.
obdI vq is a myth. I think nissan changed all their car over here to obd II since 95, because of the body change, and upcoming regulations.
