Timing chain tensioner on '98 SE

I was advised by the dealer that my timing chain tensioner is probably going, which is causing the knocking sound during idle, just wondering to those who did have it replaced, how much did it cost for the whole repair?

interesting, I read the TSB and this was common for '95-'96 Max's, but this seems rare for a '98 Max

I'm just wondering what else, besides mileage, would either make the tensioner go bad or cause something wrong in the timing chain area?

knocks when warm, but on cold startups it sounds like a fast knock for a second or 2, goes away during warmup, then comes back when fully warmed up at idle .. the car has been recently tuned, I always use premium and only premium gas, and the belts have been replaced. When I took it in for maintenance yesterday to have them check the knock, I was advised the sound was coming from the timing chain area so I'm hoping its something as simple as a tensioner worn out

make sure you are using a quality oil filter and the proper weight oil for your climate....cheap filters can cause the rattle at start-up. Synthetic oil may help the rattle.....these are all free compared to the money you are looking at for a dealer to do it.

Regardless, for a 97 and newer max to rattle while warming is somethign i have not heard of. the chain would have a hard time jumping sprockets with the number of guides in place inside. The tensioner is a $50 part and can probably be done in less than 2 hours...i think the PS belt is in the way...and thats a pain to remove/replace.

Yeah, sounds like the correct call on the timimg chain tensioner. Mike knocks whenit's cold, but not when it warms up. Good luck !!

I had a ? on part #'s

on Jerry Rome's site, it lists these part #'s for the tensioner. It seems like there's more than 1 tensioner for the timing chain, is that correct? And which part # would I need to order?

WHo deleted my link!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????? Yea if someone said they could fix my timing chain tensioner with a new one for $200, it would have been done yesterday!! There are 2 on our cars I think. Let me know the follow up if you do get it fixed, I have traced the start up noise to the starter, so hopefully its not the chain tensioners!
