ok my most recent HID kit(8000k Zmax kit) blew out only 8 months after having it on...it began with flickering of one light when id go over bumps or anything, then that one completely blew out, then the other shortly after...i took them out and put the stock bulbs back on, only to realize that the fuses were blown out as well, so im not sure if the blown fuse was the cause of the HIDs being out, but im wondering if it can be the ballast quite possibly or sumthing else or JUST the fuses? should i try to rewire it again, and is that the only way to tell??

 

ill bet anything its your ballast... my boy Tony had the same kit in his heads and fogs and had his ballasts go atleast one or more times in a matter of a year.

If your fuses where blown, I'd imagine your wiring would be to blame. HID probably pull some power and any kind of short or loose wiring will cause havoc on the wiring.

Also, if your HID's are pulling to much power through your stock headlight circuit, it will blow the fuse or fry your wiring (happened to me once!). I'm not sure if you upgraded your wiring but I'd put a heavy duty relay that your headlights turn on and off and have the power coming directly from the battery...

 

HID's use only 35W although they say the initial turn-on current may be more than with halogen bulbs. That is less not more power.

Asian kits are notorious for reliability issues. I have owned two kits now and both at failing starter/ballast problems.

BTW, when one of my ballasts failed, it would blow the fuse.

In terms of troubleshooting, your best bet would be to swap parts with the working side until the faulty component fails. Don't be surprised if the fuse blows on the good side too so just have replacements handy.

 

Its your ballast. I can also bet that. Did you get the ballast wet? Any matter, your crap out of luck of getting a new ballast, because they are now rare. If you want a reliable kit (other than a retorfit..bixenon), phillips 6000k kit is the way to go

 

take the ballast off the other side and put it on the messed up side to see if it works. If it does then boom..it is your ballast. Global imports has them for cheap.

 

I have the Hellas off of the X5 and i havent had a single problem with them. Im willing to bet that the OEM Hella are much better then all that after market stuff available. Too bad they dont make it for a H1 bulb.

 

can i buy any ballast however with the old bulbs? cuz the bulbs are still in good condition im sure...can it be possible that only ONE ballast goes bad while the other is still good, or would one being out blow out the other cuz the circuit is messed up?

 

not for the 8000k kit. Trust me, it doesnt fit the 8000k kit.

 

its not how they may draw more power during initial start-up, they 100% do. The first 4 seconds they draw a sh!tload of power to warmup. Using the stock headlight harness will shorten the life of your HID ballasts and bulbs, not to mention it messes up your stock wiring. Pay the $40 and but a upgraded headlight harness that has relays. It will make your HID kit last longer, and wont ruin your stock wiring.

Also, those kits are known to have problems, but using a upgraded harness will make it still last alot longer.
