alternator problem?

hey ya'll
I was cruising down the street with my 95 Gxe 5-speed today in the afternoon. all of a sudden, in my cluster panel, the batt light and the brake light came on at the same time. It doesn't flash or anything. It's just won't go off . and then i noticed that if i step on the gas pedal and rev the rpm over 4k range, both lights fade away and then came back on as the rpm drops back under 4k.
I came back and read haynes manual. I checked the fuselinks, they are all good. Then I am supposed to check the alternator with a meter, but i dont' have one. But it's mostly likely the alternator. I left the car in my parking lot for more than three hours, then I start the car. it starts normal, doesn't have any power outtage, yet. But my bro told me the alternator would die out soon. I need to change it right away.

Does anyone have the same situation before? how long do i have till my alternator completely die out? let me know of any help you can give me. And again, your valuable advices are appreciated first.
