Worn Engine mounts?
Worn Engine mounts?
I have a 95 with almost 170000 miles on it and recently I have been getting clutch chatter on starts. It is a stock clutch on a rebuilt tranny, both a little over a year old. Also shifts in between gears after I have started have gotten rougher no matter how smooth I try to be. The engine mounts have never been replaced and I figure it about time for them to die. If they are gone how hard and how much to replace them? Thanks

check the faqs there is lengthy explanation about the motor mounds, and what tools will be needed.
I'm not too sure to tell the symptoms of mounts about to die, I guess if you feel the engine rock back after hard stops or when changing up or down. Just 2 cents.

Most likely, my engine mounts are starting to die too. With soft engine mounts you get lurching with acceleration (in either direction) while with very stiff mounts you get vibrations at idle and turnover. There is an FAQ about putting pothyurethane into stock ones. You could go to a dealership and just buy new ones, this would be only if you were only luxury and didn't care about performance. Lastly you could get the place racing ones through cattman, but from what I have heard they are very stiff and cause a lot of vibrations at idle.
So, is this clutch chatter?:
If I coast to a near stop in 1st, without putting the clutch in, then accelerate, the car starts bucking like I'm learning to drive an MT. Sometimes it's worse than others; sometimes I can accelerate through it, sometimes the car bucks violently enough that I have to put the clutch in to get it to stop.
Which mount(s) would need to be replaced in this case? New clutch in the very near future, so the tranny mount can and will be replaced then. Front, rear, and/or right side mounts?
Thanks, people.
