You guys are lucky. I tried doing my passenger side axle tonight and the axle spline is seized inside the wheel hub spline. I took a punch and 2lb sledge to it and even went as far as removing the brake disc and putting a gear puller on axle end. All the punch and puller did was dig into the axle punch divit. I've it the areas with a ton of penetrating oil too. The axle nut came off with no problems and the same goes for the support bearing bolts. This really sucks because now I've got no choice, but to take it to a shop. A few months back when I attempted my driver's side axle, the axle nut decided to cross thread which meant I had to take it to a shop.

It's such a waste because I know how to do this and have the tools to do it There goes another $130 for a job I could have done.

I have NEVER had that happen or seen it happen. Are you sure you loosened everything enough? Did you remove the lower strut bolts and separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle?

If you did all that and it still doesnt come out just put the nut back on and tighten it a few turns. Then whack the thing with a hammer. a BIG hammer.

Let us know exactly what you did. There's no way that thing is seized unless someone JB welded the axle splines before they put them in

Loosening the tie rod shouldn't do anything because there is plenty of slack and play in the spindle once the strut bolts are removed. Once the strut bolts are removed, the spindle can flop outwards approximately 1.5" which is more than enough slack for the axle to push out of the hub. I considered putting the nut back on and letting it take the brunt of the hammer blows, but I'm certain after a couple of blows with a 2lb sledge, the threads would be done and then I might have had an even bigger problem like trying to get the nut off.

What can I say, when it comes to CV axle repairs, my car hates me. Keep in mind my car is nearly 9 years old now, has suffered 8 salty midwestern winters, and the axles are the orginals. On my driver's side axle, it was clear that the axle would slide out of the hub........but of course the nut had crossthreaded itself three turns after being broken loose.

I imagine the shop will probably have to seperate the hub from the controlling arms and then plus everything on a press. I'm sure they've seen this many other times.

Wow sorry for your problems =D

I did my passenger side axle today, the mission, taking off the axle nut, it got stuck at the end and it took a good 20minutes with a breaker bar going back and forth until it finally came out, taking the axle off the hub was easy, then we just gave it a little tug and it popped right out of the tran.

I consider me and my friend lucky it went so smoothly..

Whoa this might be digging up an old thread but what were the symptoms and whats the best way to get a good look at your CV Joints to see if they need to be replaced?
