running open exhaust...does anything except sound?

I just watched Iron Lung's videos once more and thought about this. I know he only ran an open exhaust just for the video and to see what it sounded like. I know he didn't run it like that all the time. Even though with the open exhaust, his car didn't sound like a V8 with headers and cams, it still sounded pretty cool. I have always wonder does running with an open exhaust does anything besides sound? Does it make it difference in power? I have heard different things, so I'm not sure. How about any negative effect running with an open exhaust long term?

I drove mine across town the other day to get new exhaust put on. All I had on was a y-pipe and test pipe. At partial throttle it didn't feel as peppy as it usually does. But a 3/4-Full throttle, it felt real strong. The burble the exhaust makes when you let off the gas to come to a stop is awesome.

If I ever get an exhaust on that can be unbolted I'm thinking of having a "track" exhaust made. I want it to end right at the point where it 90's over to the pass. side of the car. Maybe put a glasspack in for a little sound control and angle the end of it down towards the ground slightly. That way the only bends the exhaust encounters are the ones in the y-pipe. I'd like to get a dyno between the 2 and see if it's beneficial or not.

For the track, this would be nice. I would highly not recomend doin this for an everyday driver..

Not only is it INCREDIBLY bad for the invironment but the gains are not enough to give you ANY possitive reasoning to do so (im guessing around 1-3 hp?!), and the sound is horrible. I do realize this probably wont really change for you that drive with a testpipe everywhere, which i dont agree with either...but hey, if you want your kids to have as bad a' asthma as me cause your air is so F'd up, go right ahead.

Get in a max with a greddy catback... and then get in a max with the exaust cut....yea....BIG sound difference, and the gains are the same. One is for a cheap bastard and the other is for a normal person...lol

Then again if you wanted to be a cheap bastard and mod your car, you shoulda gotten a honda...

More and more people do this kinda stuff, and to be honest other than messing up the air in your town, your gona mess up the air in your car, try idling at a stop for like 2-3 minutes, it smells like $hit!

what else can i say...its RICE!

Aaron92se said he gets 1.5 gain in the 1/4 going from stock cat-back to exhaust cut out.

I may be wrong, but I would tend to think that it would do a little worse for you rather than helping. In the same way that 3.0" piping is too large for a N/A Maxima, I would think that this would be as well.
I don't know though.

I believe this would be of great benefit and huge gains if boosted...but unboosted, I guess you would lose a lot of low end and gain a tiny bit of high end...

I don't know though.

It's not changing the diameter of the piping, it's just changing the distance the exhaust has to flow to exit the system.

True...only changing the distance and also changes the fact that the exhaust gasses don't have to go through the b-pipe bends. Thus improving flow. You would gain more than 1-3hp...in my opinion.

uhhh.
i guess you guys have never heard of exhaust cutouts....you weld them into your existing exhaust so you can have it 'open' when ever you want, at the push of a button.
