99 Engine misfire - help!!!

99 Max se - My wife was running 87 octane and check engine light came on solid. Changed plugs (Double platnum) and air filter. When I test drove the light only came on under hard acceleration (blinking) and engine seemed to be miss firing but only under hard acceleration. Unplugged battery overnight to clear computer hoping it didnt know what to do with new air fuel mixture and improved spark. Put battery back on, Ran like a raped ape for two weeks (1600 miles)(no light). Now the engine occasionally misses at idle and really misfires under med to heavy acceleration? Could this be the Knock sensor or does it sound like a coil? How about the MAS? I have read about these problems here long ago . Sorry for long post but I need help!!!!

Sadly its your coil.

The 99 Max is notorious for failing coil packs, its so common among the 99'ers that its scary. its a matter of determining which coil pack(s) is mis-firing and replacing.

I heard someones suggestion which sounds good. Run the car and un plug a coil pack at a time, you'll feel the car when you dis-able each coil pack, but eventuall you'll get to a pack and feel no difference when you unplugg it, found the bastard. Replace and enjoy.

hope this is the solution.

Havent done a code check yet, I thought the Check Engine light had to be on to retreive codes. Double platnum plugs dont need to be gapped.

no you can still check, sometime a code maybe hidden in there but not trip the light (ghost code), if nothing is wrong when you pull codes you'll get the 0505 (nothign is wrong).

When you say sadly its your coil, does that mean they are expensive little buggers.

I had the same thng in my 1999 SE when it hi 110k. There is a simple resistance test you can do to find the defective coil. They are not cheap (app 80-100), and the funny thing is that the service bulletin says that you shold replace all of them. My question is if the factory is saying to relace all of them should that not be a recall???

Good luck on the coils..

ck all the connections first with the packs. look for corrosion in the connectors. sounds to me you have a problem like i had on a toy pickup with a connector with a corrosion problem under high loads. its a quick look with no $ spent. took me 6 months to find. but in the end it was a 20 $ fix

goto jerryromenissan.com and use "maxima" as promo code. order the mitsubitshi coils for $55 each. make sure you order 3 left coils and 3 right coils.

Are you still running 87 octane? If so that might be your problem. Nissan recommends Premium gas, so you might be feeling your knock sensor doing its job to prevent your car from knocking.

Also, what kind of plugs did you get?
