yea cuz i know how to test them with a ohm meter but i wanted to see how high of intensity the spark is and it didnt seem that brigh on all six of them, my old car the damn things were arcing like crazy. but these look like they are barely working

You tested them by seeing how far the spark would arc???

Why didnt you just stick your tongue on it and measure how much voltage you feel?

Use a multimeter

obviously you dont know what your are talking about son, what am i posed to measure the spark with a volt meter? I didnt hava a spark plug tester(ignition tester) just sitting around how else am i posed to do it? Measuring them (coils) with a multimeter tells you nothing if you have a bad ground.

A visual check of spark intensity is a tried and true method for checking coils.

Maranello, did you have the plugs securely grounded when you did the test?

Will this really give off a proper result? I know that when my coils were bad they worked 99% of the time and 99% of the time there was no knocking. There was also never a code given. Nonetheless the coils - or at least one of them anyway - were bad, since I did sometimes get knocking/pinging, and replacing them totally fixed the problem.

yea i did but i dont understand why they (sparks) are so dim, its weird cuz every car that i have dont this to the sparks were bright and intense. some one that did this give me your response

True, but i think he was expecting the coil itself to produce a spark. It's not called a spark coil. Wrong way of going about it i think.

The coil itself will produce a spark. try pulling one out and putting it close a ground. but im talking about the plugs being pluged into the coils.

Well Papa Smurf, sure you can, you have the measure their resistance with an ohm meter.

Second I have done it... just not on a Maxima.. atleast not yet. It was alot easier on my little clunker 82 Toyota corolla when could just pull the boot off plug and it was right there and the poor thing would almost turn off so you'd have to put it right back... I miss that car, it burned more oil than gas but never left me without a ride.

ANd if your trying to see the spark on the plug itself, your better off turning off the lights. The easiest way is how I said above.

Like i said above you dont know what you are talkin bout...
Do you know how a ohm meter works? Im working on my EE degree right now so believe me when i say that (using a multimeter) doesnt tell me much.

Alright Jimmy Neutron, if you know so much you'll be able to do it on your own.

lol ok heres the thing, an ohm meter can pretty much give you an idea of whats going on but the true test is seeing how intense the output is. a volt meter will not tell you the output because its like (correct me if im wrong) somewhere around 20k volts. No meter is gonna measure that. i can explain more but i would be a 3 page report. so come on lets call it a truce and not give out insufficient info and lets not call eachother names we arent 12 any more.
