How could you get up to 80mph@ 2200? I say that because I hit 80@ like 3200, 75@3000. Maybe it's just the gauges.

it's a auto tranny, these maxima's auto tranny has a huge final gear piece. my 96 auto max can hit 80 at around 2500 rpm. when i hit 3000 rpm it's already a little over 90. if you want to make sure nothing is wrong with you car, you can drive 80 with the OD off. cus then you'll run on the 3rd gear. rpm at this time should be around 4,x00 rpm. but if it's a five speed, you'll hit 70 at 3000 rpm already, but that's when true power from maxima kicks in.

are you sure the tach isn't bad...? wouldn't be the first time to have that happen among those here inthe forum...I've had one go bad.

No way will you see 80mph at 2200rpm....thats closer to 3K. And if the engine wasn't reving past 2200 it would take FOREVER to accelerate up to that speed.

When the ecu goes bad, it defaults to "fail-safe" mode. Here are the other "fail safe" items:
Engine speed: engine speed will not rise more than 3,000 rpm
fuel injection: simultaneous multiport fuel injection system
ignition timing: ignition tming is fixed a the preset value
fuel pump: fuel pump relay is "on" when engine is running and "off" when engine stalls
iacv-aac valve: full open
cooling fans: cooling fan relay "on" (high speed condition) when engine is running, and "off" when engine stalls

There is another condition not related to ecu:
Mass Air Flow sensor circuit: engine speed will not rise more than 2,400 rpm due to fuel cut

Hope this is helpful info. Lemme kno if u need FSM from my website.

Ok, others are saying it's your auto tranny. Here's the fail-safe for auto:

The A/T control unit has an electronic fail-safe (limp home mode). this allows the vehicle to be driven even if a major electrical input/output device is damaged.
Under FAil-Safe, the vehicle always runs in third gear, even with a shifter lever positio of "1", "2", or "D". The customer may complain of sluggish or poor acceleration.
When ignition key is turned ON following fail safe operation, O/D Off indicator lamp blinks for about 8 seconds

There's a lot more, but too much to type. get the fsm off my website and read there.
