how hard would it be to install rotors and pads i buy from ebayor any other source? i have no experience in fixing cars, but would love to learn more about the subject. with parts, how much would it cost me? has anyone done this, what are their tips?

i jsut did mine and my front rotors were stuck like a ****, i was banging it and it didnt come off, i even was going to cut the whole thing off, but after a hours and only a dremel i gave up and went to sleep, next morning got pissed and a sledge hammer and it was off other than that the rest of the install was easy regrease the caliper pins, get a bottle of brake cleaner and antisqueal before you start


ps be carefull not to bang up ur wheel bearing/ hub

 

My rotors slipped right off. Not a single whack required. '98 w/96K miles.

 

Ok, whatever you do, do not follow this example and take a sledge hammer to your car. Your rotor was not, "stuck like a ****". There is a special tool that is used to separate the rotor from the hub. If you are lucky you might not need this, but if your rotors have been on a while, chances are you will. With the tire off you'll notice 2 threaded holes on either side of the rotor. You can also thread bolts into those and it will slowly pry the rotor away from the hub. NO BANGING OR CUTTING REQUIRED. All in all replacing brakes and rotors is a pretty simple job overall but don't get in over your head if you're just beginning. Start by reading the how-to's and get a repair manual. Even if all you can get is the cheap autozone manual. Definately try and recruit help. Someone who has changed brakes before. Even if they haven't changed brakes on a Maxima, they will still have a general idea of what you need to do and help you through. Good luck.

listen to the guy, i banged like a madman and it dindt budge, then figured out those 2 threaded holes wouldve saved me half hour of wasting time tryign to bang it off. insert a bolt in there and be done with it quickly

 

it all depends... some peoples rotors come right off, others u hafta beat the crap out of to get out

 

Not hard at all.
I would get some OEM replacement rotors from your local auto parts store for about $20 each.
Get whatever pads you want.....with some of the brake goo.

All you need is a lug wrench and a 14mm, I believe.
You might need a 12mm.....cannot remember which one actually gets to the pads. I am pretty sure the 14mm gets the caliper housing off of the rotor.

 

Get a Haynes manual and save yourself from this crap. For one you won't be going in blind on how to change your brakes plus they have a proper way to bleed the brakes.

The question is...what kind of bolt do you need to insert into the rotor? I could not find what size it was anywhere...not even my Haynes manual says what size...so I took a hammer to the rotor...after a little beating it came out. Definitely be careful not to hit your lugs...I hit mine and had to fix the threads before I could get my lug nuts back on...
