No they aren't the same. It will work but I guess you'll get a CEL, maybe not. Also I think the AT ECU blips the throttle at upshifts or downshifts.

DAVE Sz you are very wrong. I have a 5-speed ECU in my Auto. They are interchangable. The ECU doesn't have anything to do with the shifting of the AT. That's what the TCU is for.

It's the TCM actually. And I'm not wrong. With an auto ECU a 5spd will get a blip of the throttle. Don't you think that by some crazy chance the nissan engineers actually connected the ECU and the TCM? That would be crazy wouldn't it? We're talking about auto ecus in a 5spd not vice versa.

dont' do it. i'd go for the ones that's made for the right cars. i'm sure most of maxima users are very careful buying their mods. you must do the same, too. you don't want to go for it and regret that it doesn't work.

the reason I'm asking is because there is one for sale for cheap but its from his 96 auto. If it works on my 5speed I'll just buy it and save a lot of $$.

Anyone ever done this?

Actually you are wrong nightrider, I too have an auto ECU in my 5 speed and have used it intermittently over the last 2.5 years, and it does blip the throttle if you are at a dead stop and go from neutral into a gear, and also holds the throttle at about 12-1300rpm if you are in neutral coasting to a stop. Once you stop the RPM will drop back to normal idle.

So in short yes you can use an auto ECU in a 5spd but you will get a check engine light and those throttle blips, but they aren't anything that affects driveability or power.

I'm really not wrong. When you install it, you have to reset the ECU for it to adjust to the new car. When I installed my ECU the first time I started it the RPMs jumped up. After a reset is works as normal. I have used auto ECUs in the 5-speed too and have never come across the throttle blipping. Your case is very rare.

I've never reset my ECU per the screw on the side of it, but the removal (disconnection of power) is the same thing, and I've done that tons of times (swapping back and forth between ECUs, letting others borrow the ECU, etc), however based on what you have said I will try to reset the ECU tomorrow. Also I suppose its a possibility that certain auto ECUs or certain years do this but not all, which would also be an explanation. Maybe the ECU I have is the rarity and others not blipping are the norm, but since it is the sole experience I have with it, I assumed it to be true across the board. I will report my findings tomorrow after I reset it.

You are very helpfull Neal. Thanks a lot! You have a good rep on the org for being honest and as helpfull as possible. This is why I trust your input.

I am going to go ahead and get the auto ecu for my car.
