What's wrong with my 97 SE... I lost to a Hyundai!!!
About 2 weeks ago, me and a friend went out to get some Wendy's one night, and we came across this 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 w/ dual fart-cans. We were buzzing after a few drinks so my friend puts his window down and flips the guy off as we pass.
Heh, we come to a light to make a left to go to Wendy's, and this guy follows me. After the light turns, he pulls up beside me, and asks if I wanna race. This is around 2 am on a deserted straight back road. I just have an injen-style CAI intake and stupid auto trans. I don't know what he has yet except for cat-back.
We talked a bit, and we raced three times on 3 honks on each run.
1st run - he cheated and jumped early and beats me by about 2 cars. (his fault)
2nd run - we start about even and I manually shift my auto. I hit the rev limiter and missed my shift. lost by a car. (my fault)
3rd run - he honks, in the end we're even, and he is maybe ahead by a bumper. (i didnt miss my shift here, and he actually started maybe a millisecond after me.)
All runs were done from a ~30mph roll on.
When we got to Wendy's we talked a bit, and turns out he was pretty cool. He complimented my Max, and he seemed surprise that I kept up with him. I was shocked that I didn't beat him. What gives? My Max seems to be in top shape, and I've done most of the maintenance myself. The ECU isn't throwing any codes, and I've tested my knock sensor. It registered ~560 on the multimeter. I compared the specs:
Him
03 Tibby: 170 hp/181 ft/lb, 0-60 7.8s (manual)
He had an Injen CAI, cat-back exhaust, and 6-spd manual trans.
Me
97 Maxima SE: 190 hp/205 ft/lb, 0-60 7.6s (auto)
Injen-style CAI and auto-trans.
I thought it would've been an easy kill, and I'm starting to think there is something seriously wrong with my Max. Sorry for such a long post.
PS Since then, I have done the DR mod, and I'm hoping that would've helped.

1. hes gotta manual you have an auto thats a serious disadvantage
2. what about weight? I'm not sure the weight of a tiburon but you might be 100lbs+ heavier than him.
3. age... your car is 6 years older
PS... I didn't see you wrote this in your post [about 0-60 times]
... never use 0-60 times for comparison for two cars especially with manuals. Some people purposely drive slower so those times can be achieved by even people who don't shift at the right times. Motor trend had said this during one of their tv shows either that or it was Autoweek. They had said they always give a little head room even for bad drivers.

You simply need a y-pipe.
a 6-Spd Has a great advantage over a 4spd auto, and you shouldn't have been so high that that you "missed" a shift There's no power up there. Until you get MEVI
There isnt anything wrong with your maxima, after our WHP loss with auto you guys are running similar WHP and he is at least 400LBS lighted WITH the 2 extra gears.

edit: my next upgrade will prolly be a y-pipe, but I'm starting to lean towards suspension or rims. Decisions...
