Build Auto Tranny (Cyro, Internals, Level 10), or Swap to 5 Speed

By summer I should have a PFI Turbo Kit and the full works. I'm hoping to boost anywhere between 9-14PSI. I have a auto tranny that's in pristine condition so now I'm thinking of either swapping it to a 5 Speed, OR building the internals like cyro treating it, bulletproofing it, etc. Once the tranny has been built, or swapped I'm hoping that's it. I do not want to consistently have work done to it, and I also want it to be realiable and durable. What would you guys recommend? Thanks.

if ur mostly gonna drag race...auto it can be built to shift way faster than stick and put a stall in.....if ur gonna auto-x and such 5spd......either way the 5spd may not last as long as if u do all that stuff to the auto

Definitely stay with a bulletproof auto. Among the benefits aforementioned, you'll also build boost through shifts whereas with a stick shift, you will momentarily lose boost when you shift. Also, no human will shift as fast as an automatic can.

I'm going to say 5 spd. I agree that auto provides all the above-mentioned benefits, but I think driving a 5 spd is just much more fun. Sure, it's better to shift lightning quick and keep boost between shifts, but how often are you going to be at the track vs. driving around? I vote 5 spd for the overall experience.

Well yea traffic is a very big issue. How much would it all cost to bulletproof, install high stall TQ Conv., etc...? Would there be less or more drivetrain loss with the auto as oppossed to the 5 speed?

Estimates I've read around the org are around $3K however drivetrain loss will be less than a 5spd.

It all depends on what you want. I live in Southern California and sit in 2 hours of traffic a day with my 5 speeds and it doesnt bother me, cause as soon as traffic breaks Auto can be made faster in the 1/4 but vs. a 5 speed on the freeway the auto will look foolish.

Built auto will be faster (especially for turbo because no BOV release between shifts), but 5spd is funner.

You decide.

definately 5 speed if you are thinking turbo. i doubt you are going to get the performance you are thinking that you will from your bullet-proof auto. a "real" racing auto tranny is great but not build for daily driving and big$$$. I think not having control on what rpm you shift on and when you want the turbo to kick in/ turn off would suck. (and the bov is not there because it is a 5 speed) i have an auto and am also debating swapping a 5spd.

My Maxima originally had the built auto in it and now i Have the 5spd in my car. I enjoy driving the 5spd but my auto was built so well, with High stall converter and twin lockup plates for rev matching to shift into each gear that I wish I could have installed it in my current car, but oh well

And it was full race built, as a matter a fact it held a warranty knowing the car was going to the track, However it was very streetable
