Alarm / Remote start
Alarm / Remote start
I picked up an alarm/remote start system from one of my buddies today, but from what a local shop told me you need a certain type of alarm because the keys have the security chip in them and one of the keys needs to be installed in the system for it to work right. Were they BSing me or is there a way to bypass it? I'm trying to avoid shelling out 550 bucks for them to install one. I'm fairly proficient with wiring and think I can install it myself, but that key issue is the only thing iim weary about.

Okay, your key has a built in microchip so your ignition can identify the key. A shop I got mine installed at said that there is some sort of harness you need to get to bypass the ignition/microchip. Luckily, I didn't have a microchip in my key.
I dunno if you want to install this kind of stuff in your car. It took the shop to do mine about +2hrs. My installation was only $215.

What kind of "chip" exactly is in the 99 Maxima's key ?? Does the key look different ??
The reason I ask is that GM cars have VATS (vehicle anti theft system) keys. It's a small pellet on the shaft part of the key that the dealer called a "chip" but was actually just a resistor. For the the VATS system, you just had to measure the resistor on the key, of which there were several possibilities, and then get a resistor and bypass the system much like you would bypass the knock sensor. Then you could start your car with any key with matching teeth instead of having to get the "special" key from the dealer. This bypass also allowed cars with VATS to have remote starters.

Here's a link to a bypass kit, seems like you could probably do the bypass yourself. It looks to be a transponder system as opposed to just measuring a resistor, better than the GM version.

Most newer cars have a transponder system to prevent your car being stolen when the stock alarm is on. You can get the tranponder bypass kit, there is a generic brand for most cars. I have seen them around $25-50 in ebay. I am pretty sure you can do it yourself.
Good luck
Good luck
Just break one of your keys apart and take out the chip. Crazy glue it to the outside of your keyhole, should work, but I dont know if you will be able to turn your alarm on after, I think the car senses the key by the chip. o yeah make sure it doesnt touch a magnet either

I knew that you needed to either bypass it or have one of the keys inline, and i'd rather bypass it cuz those keys aint cheap either.
I'll start a new thread in a week or two about how I messed up my wiring trying to install it and nothing works!
If you have a Viper 791 xv you can order a bypass module. Just make sure you actually have a chip in your key. If you do have the chip the manual says that you need p/n 555U. You can get it from any viper dealer. My 96 GXE didn't have a chip in the key so there was no need for the bypass module.

But I think those 99s w/ ECUs similiar to the 2000 Maximas had this "key issue"
