Sputtering, need help

I'm experiencing a sluggish sputtering up to 2000 rpm, then the VQ revs fine. Its especially evident at the 1500 range and when light braking at stoplights. Any ideas before I have it looked at by my mechanic and no I haven't had time to check ecu, yet.

It might be a dirty fuel filter. When was the last time you change your fuel filter?
