Hi
I have a 1995 nissan maxima. 84K miles.

I took it to walmart for oil change and they did not do it and told me that there was oil plug gasket and pan was damaged.

My mechanic saw the car and found
1)right outer axle leaking some fluid and told me to get it fixed . cost is 135$.

2)and the oil pan will cost 60$ to fix it or 175$ for new one.

are these prices ok

"Get it fixed" is too vague to permit a yes/no/maybe answer.

What will you get for $135? A replacement CV joint boot? A replacement CV joint? A replacement axle shaft?

What will you get for $60? A repair done by welding? A repair done by epoxy cement? A one-size-fits-all rubber drain plug?

Are these prices in US$ or Cdn$? It makes a difference!

I suggest you get a second opinion from a different repair shop... and be sure you come away with more specifics about the damage your car has and the proposed method of repair. Don't be ashamed to stand there, asking questions and taking notes. If the technician isn't able to communicate his ideas in simple terms maybe he isn't able to repair your car properly.

Re: More information needed

the mechanic/body shop quoted 135$ to remove the CV boot,
fix the rubber part and grease it and fix it back.

can u tell me the difference between Cv joint boot and just
Cv joint and is there something like CV boot.

all prices are US dollars

basically the oil pan has a dent. and the screw looks like it has jumped a thread and maybe damaged.

so the mechanic said he will try to fix the pan if he can open the screw and replace the gasket.

I suggest you get a second opinion fro

Dan is right. I have found that no matter how much you know about cars and their service issues, some technician's will still try to get over on you.

Joints and boots

CV = Constant Velocity. Your Maxima is a front wheel drive car. It has two axle shafts. Each axle shaft has two CV joints. Each CV joint is surrounded by a flexible protective rubber bellow called a "boot". The boot serves to keep grease in, and keep dirt out. If a boot is damaged the CV joint will become damaged unless the boot is replaced promptly.

Re: Joints and boots

So is 135$ US good enough to repair the CV right outer boot. that includes whatever is needed to repair it , grease it and labor.

$135 is a reasonable charge. You may balance that repair cost against another option. Instead of repairing one damaged boot, you could replace the axle with a remanufactured unit. That gets you two remanufactured CV joints and two new boots. Ask your preferred service provider for a price on a reman axle. In many places you can get this for $200, parts and labor.
