RPM is jumpy while accelerating HELP!!

i have no idea what is goin on with my car but something is definatly not right.....

when i accelerate it doesnt run smooth....the rpm is really jumpy.....the rpms would drop alittle and then the rpms will go back up to where its suppose to be....seems like there is a lag or something....the engine is not running at its proper speeds....

i just replaced the KS and i realized that the power is back now but its still running weird....i replaced all 6 plugs (NGK coppers)

would it be my coils?

could very well be. a good test is to put it in neutral and give it gas and see how smooth the motor runs. it could also be the trans.

If the car doesn't feel like it's misfiring, then it kinda sounds like a slipping clutch. But trying do diagnose a problem over the internet is very hard

i just replaced the fuel filter today....and its still doin the same thing....i have no clue what the hell is goin on......the only thing left i can think of would be my knock sensor (if i installed it wrong)...or my coil packs......or my clutch slippin..... the car's rpm and engine is fine but when i give it more gas it seems like it struggles to REV.....it revs but it kinda jumpy and it lags alittle.....definatly not normal....what do u guys think?

It's not the kncok sensor and who ever said that has no idea what a knock sensor even does.

A bad coil pack will make the car run on 5 cylinders. It's a very distinct feeling.

With a slipping clutch, the motor will run fine.

It may be the MAF sensor

no, itdoesnt, i thas to do few a few things, most notably the coil packs. doenst a malfunctioning MAF lock you out to 2500 rpms or osmething.

RE: RPM is jumpy while accelerating HELP!!

I have exactly the same problem, so one thing that I can assure you with is that it doesn't have to do anything with the transmission. The reason is because you had mentioned that yours is a manual, and I have an automatic. It does the same exact thing. It hesitates quite noticeable under light acceleration, and when I step on the accelerator it holds for a second, and then takes off. The rpm's also jump at this time, and I do not know what is causing this. I have had a tune-up with everything replaced, and the coil packs were tested as well. It seems that almost everyone that I know with the Maxima has this problem. I am not sure why someone still hasn't figured out what the true cause of this is, because I have already spent too much time and money on this. I have a 1998 automatic SE with 53,000 miles.

Get a older maxima. It seems like if you have a 95-99 maxima the 98 and 99 have more problems than the early year ones. Coil Packs were bad in 99 also.

ohm out coils, and if thats not the problem check the injectors, better yet, check for codes. (failing o2 sensors)

I have that annoying problem also. I just replaced all the coil packs in my 99 because of multiple missfires so I definately know it is not the coils. I am starting to think that either my front O2 sensors are starting to go or it is my MAF. Other than that it runs great. I get around 600 kilometres per tank so it not effecting gas usage.

i dont know about that man... well at least in his case... my car does this only when in gear (auto) not in neutral or park.. but i dunno..
what i do know is that out cars have real crappy fuel injectors, that might be the problem too cuz nobody really ever talks bout them on this forum.
i sure hope that we can figure this shiet out!!!

Could be O2 sensor, or something A/F related - if the car is surging. It's hard to convey car noises over the internet even with video or sound.

well im bringin in my car to the dealership on tuesday and having them check it out....i have no idea what it could be......the only thing that it can possibly be is o2 sensors, clutch, or coil packs.....other than that i have no clue.......this prooblem is really bothering me cuz my car is slow as f u c k and the rpms are soo jumpy....soo much engine lag.....and also im sure that this is not good for the engine or transmission....

i might go to the auto part store tomrw and fill my tank with some fuel injector cleaner.....maybe that might do the trick....DOUBT IT THO!

And i quote
" turn igniton switch to on
start engine and warm it up sufficiently
check voltage between terminal 1 and ground*

conditions voltage

igniton ON pos(engine stopped)= less than 1
idle 1.0 -1.7
idle 4000 rmp 1.0 -1.7 Approx 4.0
* terminal 1 is closest to the throttle

I say that cause the wires that connected to my spark plugs had a arc in them on my SR20 so whenever I was at a light or at idle it would bounce like there was no tommorrow. At or above 3k rpm's it would go away, however it got worse so I took it in.

I had a Arc in my wires, now if you want to call them Ignition Wires or Spark Plug wires or Wires that lead over Valve cover to each plug, I could care less and I hope to not confuse you with my lack of skills when it comes to automobile terminology. Just trying to help and get above 10 posts

I have the same problem...

JLiucifer! Hey man, good to see others with this hard to describe problem!! I have had my car into the mechanic 3 times with no success trying to describe this crap. You described it exactly. The way i found this thread is through your new post about the clutch. Interestingly, i got in my car today and the pedal went to the floor and didnt come back. (see this thread: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=355142I). I towed it in to my mechanic and he said its the clutch. I baught the EXEDY off ebay for $109. I AM REALLY HOPING this will be the last of the problem. I also was getting a K/S error code and replaced that last week which didnt fix the problem. My mechanic assured me it was not the MAF also as he "cleaned it" and the problem did not go away. I also put in some $10 Fual System CLeaner with my last tank of gas and no change there either. My next step was spark plugs and maybe wires... Anyway, I will let you know how things go after the clutch is installed, hope you do the same. feel free to PM me about it. I HAVE to get to the bottom of this BS I am sick of my car running like an american car... ok ok it's not THAT bad.
