engine turns over fine but it won't run

OK, here is the problem...

I just went out to start my car, turned the key, it seemed to start fine except it only ran for what seemed to be about 3 revolutions before dying. I then tried to start it back up and all it did was turn over. It doesn't even have a hint of ignition...likeits getting either no spark or no fuel.

Have any of you had this problem?

Thanks again for any input.

1. Check the fuel pump fuse
2. Is the check-engine-line showing any codes?

will do first thing tomorrow, i do have the manual for the car, does it have the codes in it or is there a good reference here? By the way, its a 96 SE.

I'll be sure to post my findings so others can learn too.

Thanks

ok, that was easy, the codes i got were 0304 which according to the site is a knock sensor problem. Now i wonder if that is something that will cause it not to start? I'm off to do more research and check all the fuses. Any other input is appreciated.

Does anyone know if a bad knock sensor will cause this problem of the car not starting?

Thank again...and again...

knock sensor will not cause the car not to start, clean off your camshaft pos sensors and crankshaft position sensors, they may be culprit for a turnover but no start condition

ok, here is an update...

according to the diagnostic code, 0304, there is a problem with the knock sensor. I also checked the fuel pump fuse, it is ok. I checked for continuity between terminal A(i assume its the one with the black wire?) and ground. Continuity exists.

After putting the connector back together i tried to start the car again, it started and ran for a few moments, very rough idle. The idle spped seemed normal, just very rough.

I then checked for any new codes. it still gave me the code for the knock sensor.

So...do i replace the knock sensor because the code 0304 even though it checks out good after performing the check per the manual?

I do agree that a bad knock sensor should not prevent the car from running...it should simply change the timing and fuel mixture to prevent knocking right?

Well, there is an update, any other pointers are appreciated in the mean time.

.peace.

A knock sensor will not prevent the car from starting or running. Check as above first (camshaft and crankshaft position sensor). A bad knock sensor, as you've said, will just retard the timing. Seems as if you have a knock sensor code, but the culprit is something else.

check the terminals on the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, thers 2 crankshaft sensors and 1 camshaft sensor, one of them might be dead, ORRRRR, might be coated with metal filings due to wear, its worth checking since itll onlytake 10 minutes to checkall three of them
