Torque Converter Replacement

My tranny has been acting up for over a year and I really think my torque converter is going bad. Is this something that is easy/cheap to replace or do you just go ahead and replace the entire tranny? I do not want a high stall torque converter so where is the best place for a stock replacement?

I would stick with OEM unless you plan on going boost.

What are the symptoms?

On stock cars, the solenoids usually go out before the TC.

Slipping leads to immature wear. They're in charge of shifting and when they get worn down the tranny shifts a-Ss slow, and slurrs along to the next gear, and even will rev during the shift, slipping tranny usually = bad solenoids. I've changed some on a 4th gen (not mine) and after, the car shifted like new, and that was the only item repalced.

I'm also thinking his car's an auto(GLE), if not then...yeah..

But we all know not all GLE's here are still auto.

Car is an auto. I get VERY sluggish shifts. It never slips between shifts - well maybe a grand total of 2 or 3 times. I can make it slip off the line any time I want to by giving it a lot of gas. A strange thing happened Sunday night while I was in a drive thru. My car was in drive and I was stopped so the RPM's were at 500. At 500 my steering wheel vibrates - I think this is a recent thing. So all of a sudden I feel something cut loose and my car starts idling at 850. I put in into neutral and back into drive and get the same thing. It kept going back to 850 when at a stop until I got up to highway speed and the torque converter locked - then when I stopped my car idled at 500. Whatever my problem is it is getting worse and I talked to a couple friends who say all of my symptoms sound like a torque converter. What RPM's should I be getting when stopped and in drive?

its your solenoids or probably clutch packs. most likely you will need a tranny rebuild. i would just get another tranny itll probably end up the same. i got mine for 400 with 60k miles on it. you tc will have like scratches and digs in it if its bad, and your internals would def go if your tc is bad.

see if you could buy a used tranny, you will save money, and check the tranny filter and make sure theres no metal filings in there.

I think I will attempt this over my Christmas break. Are there any writeups for just swapping out an auto tranny?
