Erratic tachometer

Hello everyone...

My tachometer has gone mad! This started happening a few weeks ago. The tach does not go past 2k and flutters all over the place when the tranny shifts. It doesn't even read normal at idle. I have not modified the gauge at all and the engine performs fine. Has anyone experienced this problem? TIA

Victor

Arrrggg! I was afraid of that. I don't think I'll sprint $400 for a replacement though. I was looking on-line to see if there are any companies that are dedicated to fixing these problems. I am going to give them a call to see what they say. This problem isn't too common it seems with our cars but as they age more and more people are becoming aware of it. I'll post here if I find a place that will repair our clusters for a reasonable amount. Thanks for your response.

I bought a gauge cluster off ebay for $100 and pulled the tach out of it....then resold the rest of it to a guy I had bid against for $60 as he needed the speedo.

good luck,
jb

Good idea! I thought of eBay too but there aren't any "SE" style gauges on there right now. I guess I'll wait until one pops up. To those who have swapped out gauges:

Did removal of the tach require you to unsolder it? I hope not...

Thanks!

No...three tiny screws in the back of the cluster

Old thread bump sorry. This happened to me today on my 98 5sp. Tach jumps from 0-500rpm and won't go much over 2K. Temp gauge maxes out, fuel gauge shows full, and odometer shows 999,999 (maybe some day!). Brake, seat belt, and door ajar dummy lights all work fine. Runs fine.

Turned it off and let it sit. Went to try after lunch and it did the same thing, turned it off and started again, and everything was A-OK.

Is the precursor to needing a new gauge cluster? Are there any other connections to look at/wiggle before taking apart the dash? Daniel B Martin had a way to test the tach terminals, is there a similar test for gas and temp.

Thanks Orgers,
FK.

This morning just the temp gauged was pegged. Then turned key on and off and just gas gauge. Again and odometer and tach were effed. Is there some sort of cycle the car is doing to test the gauges?

Help!
