Wow, mechanics are dumb.
Took my dad's '04 in to Midas for an oil change. Then I asked for a quote for a new knock sensor on my '99. The guy behind the counter looked at me a little dumbfounded, and asked his partner for a book that contains all the labor costs. He opened up the Nissan section, and looked under "N" for "Knock sensor." I gave him a few minutes and said "Uh, it's under 'K'", and he's like "Oh yeah." I had to keep from laughing then. And later I learned it would be $600 plus just for this one little part! Is this even right for the cost of a little sensor?

The sensor usually goes for $185 from places like that, and the labor is about $300 for labor because most places take off the IM to get to it.
Sounds right, but the sensor can be had for 90-110, and also can be done in 15 minutes at home by the DIY'er.

I called up the dealer and he quoted $364.80 for the sensor. For once I actually prefer the dealer over a local mechanic.

I haven't done this before, so I'm just a little confused.

And by the way, I took 2 minutes and got this from the sticky entitled, 4th gen How To's
unless it's a 99 cali spec..

Midas employees aren't mechanics. Some mechanics are quite intelligent and really know their stuff.
The book is telling him to take off the intake manifold. You can do it easier and quicker. Read the faqs for instructions. If you have a cali spec that may make it more difficult/impossible to do the easy way.
Get it on ebay or through JRnissan.

Sorry dude but stealing isnt cool. Ive had both my cars broken into and or stolen so i know what it feels like. Im sorry but if i saw you trying to steal my $****, yea flat-lining your @$$ would be a blessing compared to what you would go through. That just isnt cool man.

It took me 2 hours to do the knock sensor. That includes removing the battery and intake jungle (still stock) to give me the luxury of more room to get in there. Go check out www.motorvate.ca, he has a great website for do it yourself projects, including this one.
Also - why would you ever take a car to midas? Especially a new Maxima? Oil changes can be done at home in 30 minutes and for under $10 with a good filter and some good non-synthetic oil. Midas, Meinike, Jiffy Lube, Maaco, AAMCO, places like that will never do work on my cars...

Saw another .org member do mine the other day. He never did it before and it took 15 mins as well.
Did not even stick his hands to grab it. Just used a very powerful magnetic stick and drove the screw in part way with that and then followed up with a SOCKET with a knuckle joint on it.
15 min and I was gone.
