Need a softer ride

OK, I've had Progress springs and KYB GR2's for about a year now and have decided that although the cornering and handling are great, the ride is way too stiff for daily commuting.

Can I change either springs or shocks and smooth out the ride?

I don't want to change both (too expensive), so would like to change one or the other to improve the ride. Any ideas?

I know personally H&R's give that wheel gap that is bigger in the front than in the back

If you don't mind the wheel gap, go back to stock SE springs. The GR2s, with the stock SE springs will give you a little firmer than stock ride, but a nice balance between handling and comfort...and a 4x4 look as a bonus

The harsh ride is coming from the GR2's, their a pretty stiff strut. The Progress spring is actually a mellow spring. Upgrade to Tokico Illuminas and your Progress setup will ride excellent. You can swap just the front struts out first, the rear GR2 might do just fine matched up with a Illumina front strut. That will save you some $$ at first, then if you want the adjustability for the rear and an even smoother ride, you can get the rear Illumina shocks later on.

Cheapest price on illumina's you'll find. Still quite a few 4th gen sets left. They have them in stock so no waiting for the GD. You can order now.

Some long travel rear strut mounts will smooth out the ride quite well also
