just take a flathead screwdriver, put it between the security light tab and the cruise control tab, and pull it out. then your going to have to take the screwdriver and push it around the little clip parts around the box after you take it out

When you do change the LED, you'll see that the stock one is mounted on a little rubber base that can just be pulled off. Inside this rubber base is a tiny resisitor. I tried re-using the base and stock resistor to save time but found it annoying to handle and just soldered on a resistor and LED instead.

Took less time and is more secure to solder, just test which one positive and negative. While I was at it, I made sure the new LED went up all the way against the face instead of sitting flush on the base like the stock LED. This made a big difference in brightness. The new LED sits high off the base compared to the stock one.

When I put the new LED flush like the stock one, it made the circle light up white, but when I put it up against the face, it was WHITE !! Below is a pic.

The cruise control has 2 light bulbs, not LED's. I changed the one that lights up "cruise cont" but not the other one as it'd blind me at night. You can also solder in an LED like I did the security light, just take your time putting it back together. It's the second hardest after the hazard button.

How did you test the led? Multimeter? How was the LED be tested (it acutally light up) before putting it into the car, so a fues or something doesnt blow, incase something was wired up wrong?

sweet. I just poped mine out of the car. The grey rubber surrounding it, did you cut it or break it or is there a non destructive way of getting it off?

thanks.

thanks.

you can just pull off the entire unit (red led with rubber base). Once it is off you will see that the lead for the red LED is just wrapped around the rubber base so as to make contact with the contact. From here you can just unwrap the lead off of the LED.

Radio shack sells LEDs, granted you will get ripped off, but for just one LED and one resistor you will be fine. you will probably pay about 4 bucks for a resistor and an LED from radio shack. There is not a part number, just look at the brightness measured in mcd's. I am using a fairly bright one at 6000, but you don't need something that bright, but i wouldn't go too low either. I would say something above 500 mcd's. Also, if you plan on doing more led's order online from somewhere that gives volume discounts. I use Newark, but there are others.

yea radio shack is $3.99 for a 3000mcd blue or red led, resistors are $.99.

I think they have a 500 mcd led for 1.49 but that might not be bright enough.

So if i want to chanfe the existing red LED to a blue one, do I have to solder in a resistor also? How many ohms should the resistor be? On which side do you solder the resistor (positive or negative)?

i kept the grey peice when i did myn. I carfully puled out the old LED and inserted the new one in the exsact same position and used needle nose plyers to bend the prongs. I didnt have any Resistors laying around and i was to lazy to buy some so i used the stock houseings and stock resistor.

I am wondering this too, I think the resistor is soldered to the negative side ( some one please correct me if I'm wrong on that)I'd guess when you get the resistor off and your going to buy a new one, try to match up the colors (brown orange red) then you should have the same type resistor needed.

unless we need a stronger resistor if we up the brightness of the LED.

yea some numbers would be benificial, or color code for resistors

I've used 3mm and 5mm LED's both with 470 ohm resistors. Worked great. You can solder the resistor to either the positive or negative end, doesn't matter as long as it has one.

Whenever I can't see the pics, I right click on the red X. When the menu pops up I left click on "show picture".

It works most of the time.
