stock remote no longer works

my stock keyless entry remote BARELY works now. the trunk, unlock and panic button no longer work. sometimes they will work, but i gotta hold the button down for atleast 30 seconds. the lock button does work, but i gotta hold it down for about 5-7 seconds. i replaced the bettery and it did nothing. luckly i have an aftermarket alarm...but that is also failing so i gota use my aftermarket remote to unlock the doors, and use the stock one to lock the doors.

do the stock remotes tend to break? could getting a new remote fix this problem or is it a problem with the actual system?

The stock remotes do tend to wear out after years and years of use. It is the buttons and electrical contacts under them that wear. You can buy a replacement from Ebay for $15-20. Don't pay the inflated prices from the dealer.

Before you do that, change the battery in the remote.

You can also try opening the remote and cleaning it out. Get some rubbing alcohol and cotton ***** and clean off all the contacts until the cotton ***** don't get dirty anymore.

I had my remote fall into a swimming pool. I dried it off but it worked crappy. I had to hold buttons down, range sucked, etc. I opened it up, cleaned out all the lint and the contacts. The inside of the remote was actually bluish like the pool. After I cleaned it up, it worked like new.
