Car "Shakes" sometimes

Hi All,

I have an auto 97 I30 and I'm experiencing a wierd problem. Sometimes the car (while driving on freeway, 50MPH+) will begin to feel very rough. When it happens, the car shakes a bit, and braking will make the car shake a lot. It only happens once in a while - maybe 5 times in the last 1000 miles, and it only lasts a few minutes.

The RPM gauge isn't going up or down. It goes away by itself. It's not terribly rough, still very driveable, but you really feel it when applying the brakes, though its still very noticable while driving normally.

I just had fuel filter and plugs replaced (with NGK copper) and always use 93 Octane fuel. Any ideas what this could be? All told I can live with it, but I'd like to know what it is and what can be done...

I had that problem too, my tire pressure was low so i put some air in the tires and everything was fine.

if it only happens during braking, your problem is most likely warped rotors.

Check your tire pressure, alignment and rotors. Interstingly enough, if you have a blown strut it could be causing one wheel to bounce, which would cause the 'shaking' as well.

Check to see if the air pressure is the same. If one side has more air, than the shaking will occur. What's the mileage on the front wheels? If the thread is almost worn out, than is useless to do tire balancing. A pair of tires typically runs 50,000 miles, give or take in city driving. Hope this info helps.
