Picking battles with my dealership over brakes
Picking battles with my dealership over brakes
I've got the annoying brake squeal problem with my 99 SE. There is no TSB, and my ASP warranty expires on the 19th of this month.
At issue: I can't tell if my pads are worn down because the squeal the pads make is identical to the wear-indicator noise.
Dealer Solution: Resurface my rotor and put the lub on the calipers to stop the squealing. My cost.
My solution: Dealer supply me with non-value pads. I'll replace them on my own time.
Alternate solution: any suggestions? I'm at my witts end with the dealer... Anyone else have luck with dealers on this issue?

What do you mean by the squeal your pads make is identical to the wear indicator noise?
A good deal of brake squeal is from techs not using a torq wrench when tightening up the bolts. The many use the impact gun and just over tighten them. This will create minor bend in rotor that can cause brake squeal. The fix to this is to have your pads replaced and rotors shaved again. Then have them torq each bolt with a torq wrench.
Its just a suggestion.

most brake squeals are caused by dirt grease or grime on the pad...make them cut the rotors and put new pads on or scuff the other pads clean..i cant almost guarentee this is the problem

Nope sorry...That does cause break squeals. What grease and grime will cause is hard spots. When metal is treated to be a harder surface the companies use oil on the material. Anyone knows this. Yes, dirt, grime and grease can cause noise. But over tightening can do the same.
I have taken it and passed my ASE test, thanks for the info..Every ASE mechanic I spoken to agrees with it. There are plenty of people out there that just torq the bolts down with an impact gun and not give it a second thought into what its actually doing. So it is very possible to have it happen.
