Pissed Off!!!!! Let me know what you think
Totaled my old car so I was in a pinch to find a used car. Came across a 97 Nissan Maxima GLE with low miles for a decent price. I decided to buy the car. The next day I realized that all GLE's come with leather. Mine didn't have leather. (Don't flame me. I didn't know too much about Maximas at this point.) Looked at the sales contract. The contract said the car was an SE. At this point I was confused as hell. Looked under the hood at the VIN plate. It's neither a GLE or an SE. It's a GXE. Maybe the dealer was trying to rip me off or maybe he honestly didn't know. Either way, do I have a right to take this car back?? I don't trust the car at this point.
I don't know what they'll do if you bring it back...false advertising? fraud? I don't know. However, depending on what price you got the car for (look on nada.com or kellyblue book), you could've just paid the price for a GXE. Look into it anyways.
While you're at it, try to make sure that the car is in optimal running condition --- no leaks, squeals, codes (do the self diagnostic test), etc.
Good Luck

I would definitely bring it back. You paid for....and i assume they priced you for a GLE and you got a GXE instead. You bought a car based on what they were saying it was and it wasn't. I would think they should either refund you or adjust the price accordingly [if you still want it]

Because they are misleading you. They are trying to sell you soemthing that it isn't. The GLE is roughly $800-$1000 more book value then a GXE. It is like going to a stereo place and the guy tells you it is a 1000 watt system then when you get home it is only a 200 watt system. Yea you still like the sound but that isn't what you payed for!

They're essentially the same car, just that the GLE has some cushy features (such as leather). What's it matter what the letters are.
I see. Did you have it checked out by a trusted mechanic? Unless you are one yourself you should always do this when buying a used car...if not do it now while you may still have a way out.

My friend that works at a Nissan dealership just told me his manager is selling his Maxima. It's a mint 99 SE-L with 40k miles. The windows are even tinted already. He wants $9,700 for it. If I can get the price down a little, I might try to scoop this one up and get my money back for the other max.
Take it back!!! It's the LAW. The dealer is required to disclose any and all information, including the correct model of the car. If the vin #'s do not match the model that dealer is up Sh!!t creek. Don't just pussout and take it in the a$$, go back there and get things right.
That is why dealer price is more. So you are protected under the law. Private party is where you can deff get screwed if not careful...

This is so stupid. You bought the car, it was obvioulsy for a price you liked but because it's a GXE not a GLE you want to give it back? What if you never found out it was a GXE? You wouldn't care would you? A 97 shouldn't have cost you more than $6k, if it did, return it anyway cause you go ripped off.

Im sorry but a dealer will and did know what he was selling. He used the fact that it was a GLE to attract an older person to buy it. It didnt turn out that way but he knew what he was doing.
On the other hand if the car is running nicely and you dont want to deal with the issues then keep it but i would let him know anyway. Its your choice.

call the nissan consumer affairs, make a report, contact that dealership and explain to them (once you have a decision) to either return and refund, or adjust the price, if they refuse tell them they will hear from your lawyer and leave. Contact consumer afairs again, they should call that dealership and try to get it worked out.
I did this and managed to get the shady dealership (Sutherlin Mall of GA Nissan . . . B!tches) to put in a new KS, Crank sensor, new clutch, odometer head, rear main seal, and more story on my web site.

though we all know in the end he did almost no research on the car. i spent 2 weeks lurking this forum before i found out what i was purchasing.
It was probably just the previous owner anyway. You may or may not believe this, but dealerships are dumba$$es. I doubt they were trying to trick him. Cars come and go so often, they don't spend the time to check up on what every car is. I work at a used car dealership and the salesmen are clueless. If it says GLE on it, then thats what they go by.
Got everything straightened out
Took the car back to the dealer and raised hell. I think he honestly didn't know that it was a GXE. He called the dealer he bought it from and raised hell with them. Gave me a full refund and an apology. Going to pick up my 99 SE-L tonight. Can't wait.
