I've always thought I had ABS. The information surely came from the dealer. The insurance inspection determined that my whip was ABS equiped. However, I've never really paid attention to having or not having ABS until today when I realized that I should be seeing an ABS light coming on when the ignition is on. So no ABS light. I checked the fuse. No ABS fuse. I put in the proper fuse thinking that I would see 'ABS' illuminating in my dash, but upon turning the ingnition on, I was promptly dissapointed. Now.. Maybe the ABS light is blown.
Or I don't have ABS. So.. Is there away to determine if a system has ABS (or not) without utilizing the ABS light for verification.

if i were u i would jus go fairly fast then hit the brakes really hard, u should feel the ABS, which is like, ah this is hard to explain so im gonna try my best, its gonna feel like the wheels lock up inconsistently....
sorry if my wording is terrible

Surprisingly enough, i found out that my 1999 GXE did not have ABS... on a rainy day.. while I was sliding into the rear end of a Jeep Cherokee. So find out- soon. The only way I got out of that scrape was by letting go of the brakes and jerking the wheel (sent me into a ditch, but kept me from being hit/hitting anyone).

Here is a safer way, when you start your car after more than 10 mins of sitting, put the car into gear, and in 2-3 seconds within moving, you'll feel a pulsation and also hear a slight mechanical grind. That is the ABS doing a self-test. If it doesn't do that, your ABS light will be on indicating a malfunction. If you have neither, there is a good chance that you don't have ABS.
Check your car and you'll know. When you turn the key to ON or ACC all the dash lights will come up. If ABS comes on for a sec you have ABS, if not you don't. If it comes on and stays on after you start the car the ABS is either malfunctioning or the fuse is out. Also why the hell would you ask a stupid question like that when they told you above how to check for it?

Wow what a thread full of retards, Dave gave the only right answer.. just turn the key without turning the car on and you'll see an ABS light pop up if you have ABS
The safest was would be to check for the ABS relay in the relay box on your passenger side of the engine bay. You can also turn your wheel sharply and look for the abs wire going down to your brakes (it'll be the only other cable/wire besides the actual brake/hydraulic cable).

The whole forum is becoming full of retards. I've been barely visiting for the past few weeks and every time I do there's dumber **** being posted. I guess its time for me to donate so I can hang around OT...
I totally see it going down the drain though, and thats exactly whats happening. These cars are getting so cheap any kid with $$$ can buy them... that and their parents are just giving them their cars as hand me downs.
Now I just ***** up the forums.. maybe one day I'll catch up to your post count

Good luck. Then again I have maybe 10 posts in the last few weeks so you might have a chance. I guarantee that I'll be past 6k at the end of next year, I have some plans and I'll be asking many questions.Originally Posted by Ant96GLE

ABS, Bose, Leather, Climate Control, fake plastiwood.... No sunroof

Sunroofs suck. They leak and make the chassis less rigid. ABS sucks too. Its heavy and takes all the enjoyment out of driving.

Assume that for SOME reason yur ABS light does not come on. So opne the hood, look at the master brake area. You should see a silver looking box with small brake lines going to each of the 4 wheels. It would be under the brake fluid container and just below the master brake cylinder. It also says ABS on it. On cars w/o ABS this box is not there.
Yo can also write down the VIN number and call any Nissan dealer and they can look it up if you do or do not.
Also - you may need to tell them the code that is behind the side mirror - close your mirrors (towards the windows) then go to the front of the car look at your mirrors and then read off the characters and write them down. This tells them all the options in the car.

LoL abs takes the fun out of driving? I've GOT to hear an explanation on this? ABS doesn't even come on until your "Fun" driving has put u in the Shat! ABS on my previous max saved me many times in the rain, florida drivers are retards when its sunny, and lunatics when its rainy. I also read an article about how much ABS does its amazing, you have no idea what your talkin about if you think its not helpful. F1 Cars would have ABS if it was legal, thats where the tech came from, they just could never use it because it gave them an unfair advantage.

PS no reason to put Number after VIN the N stands fro number so actually u are saying vehicle identification number number
Oh boy another ABS debate. F1 cars do have TCS(Traction Control System). This is a broad term that encompasses ABS. The reason that they are good in that application is because there is an extreme amount of money spent on R&D. They are state of the art. They truley can stop the slide when its needed. A bit of slide is required to go fast. Wisper from the tires means your going fast and at the limit of traction; not beyond it. The sound difference between optimal traction and past optimal is distinct. Optimal traction is a nice wisper while past optimal is nails on the chalk board. All these new systems make it easier to drive while being inattentive. These features drive the weight, and price of the car up and in turn dimenish the driving pleasure every day. Nissan or any company does not have the budget to calibrate the ABS system for every single model they make. F1 teams spend millions of dollars preparing three or four cars while Nissan spends millions preparing three or four million. Yes, ABS saves your @ss in an emergency. But if you were an good, attentive, and contemplative driver you wouldn't be four feet from some dudes bumper to cause an emergency.
Let me dig up an old ABS debate. Hang on...

I still find it funny how hard it is to figure out if you have ABS or not...
I guess most people are used to the early 90's GM's that had ABS badges all over them

It's easy.
Look at MC area for that extra manifold with all the lines going in and exiting, or take off wheels and look for the sensors behind the calipers around the hub assembly. Or check fuses.

Hmm, its not as bad is having the words 'disc brakes' imprinted on the brake pedal that they also had in before Originally Posted by Ant96GLE

Wow, disc brakes, what a luxury for a 90's vehicle.the 4th gen forum has turned into noob city, the real orgers hang in the boosted, all motor or off topic sections...
easiest way to tell is just look for ABS unit under the hood...try to change your fuel filter. if its a REAL b*tch, then you most likely have ABS
