my CV axle is torn can i still drive?

Currently I dont have the funds to replace it and have been driving it for about 1000 miles. The mechanic said it would cost about the same to replace the boot as it would to replace the whole half-shaft(200$). What will happen if i countinue to drive with the bad axle boot? Will it damage any other part of the car? Right now my max slightly drifts to the right due to the increased friction in the bearing (correct?)

Start saving for both axles asap. If it's bad enough to make the car pull, it might fail at any time. And if you are from Mercer Island, Wa, the last thing you want to do is have an axle fail on I-90 during rush hour traffic.

How long has it been bad? Technically, the joint could break but its probably not too likely unless you have been driving for thousands of miles on a bad one. Are the roads icy up there? If so the salt or whatever they put down cause it to wear/eventually break faster. If you are really short on money go to autozone and get a reconditioned one for cheap - then install it yourself.

From thinking about my CV joint replacement, when driving straight down the road the joint isn't really bending so how could it cause the car to pull?

Jeff: getting stuck of I-90 would blow goats. I am getting worried now but the car hasent started to drift any more after 1000miles of driving. Maybe i shouldn't WOT it anymore

WarrEagle: its been this bad for about 2-3 months now and the roads are not icey. The mechanic said it wouldent damage anyother part of the car and eventually it would get more severe (more drifting and noise)

maxine how much did it cost to replace the whole shaft? Where did you get it done? Did your car drift to the left/right also?

Also my car (occasionaly) makes 1 click/cluck when i turn 90degrees (at a stopsign turning right) Is that a sign of a bad bearing?

I bought one on ebay for $75 shipped great deal. Then another $100 to install. That clicking your hear is the sound of no grease in your boot.

Replace both. If one is bad, the other is one the way. I can't believe you live on Mercer Island and can't afford axles. I could arrange to have a buddy do the work (if he's not too busy) a bit cheaper if that would help.

Anyway....let check a couple things....there is only one click when doing a full turn? Is your car auto or 5-speed? Good part is...Nissan half-shafts have not been know to break apart unless Mr. Gone has touched them (inside joke...Jeff knows what I'm talking about). So the likelihood of you axle flying apart on I-90 is pretty minimal. Jeff has a good point to change them both.

There is a place in Kent called Kang Industries. They should be able to get the half-shafts for a pretty reasonable price. If for some odd reason they don't have it, Napa or Olympic Brake Supply is another good source. Since the axles have to come out, it's a good time to change the gear oil/transmission fluid since it all has to come out anyway to remove the axles....unless you like big puddles. Basically let me know if you want help doing this. I won't charge much....but it's a matter of me having free time.

PM me to discuss further.

Buy a half-shaft at NAPA or whatever for $80.

I'll help you replace it...if you don't mind driving to Puyallup.

Jeff replaced my Y-Pipe for me when I was a newb - time to pass the kindness on.
