My compressor went bad a couple weeks ago. I was able to tell by looking at the clutch/pulley assembly on the outside of the compressor. This is a bit hard to describe in a way that makes sense if you have never seen it, but I will try. The clutch/pulley assembly is a circular piece with a pulley on the outside that can spin free of the clutch on the inside. When the ac is not engaged, the pulley spins freely and the clutch assembly does not move. When the ac is engaged the clutch locks and spins with the pulley, activating the compressor. To check if it is working, start the engine with the ac off. The pulley should spin, but the clutch should not be engaged, so it should not move. Then turn the ac on. Check the clutch assembly now to see if it is spinning with the pulley. If it is not, then your compressor/clutch assembly is to blame. You could replace just the clutch, but this is much more difficult, and the clutch costs almost as much as the whole compressor.
