Yeah, swap in a VQ35DE instead.

By the way, was that 239k on the original motor?

Well, if your engine started running too hot (like from a dead pump or cracked radiator) then all kinds of horrible things could happen to your engine, but before any of them would really take effect your car should have been yelling at you that there was something very wrong.

The engine would have started hesitating badly, you would have heard knocking, your CEL would have come on and most obviously, your temp gauge would have soared up. Assuming you kept driving even after all of these signs, after your head gasket went you would have noticed a huge drop in power.

Did you make it back home with no secondary signs or did you break down somewhere between LA and SF?

Those are some good miles you had on it. I would like to know a bit more about just what happened so we all can learn what to look out for. I haven't heard of many Maximas overheating.

Our engines are cheap (check the link above). I bet you could get one put in for <$1000. Alot cheaper than a new car.

Mine overheated a few weeks ago when our heatwave first started. I noticed it once the temp gauge needle had got up just before that 3/4 line and the car sounded weird. Was my fault though, I hadn't ever had the radiator flushed and it was 40% blocked. Got it flushed and we're now having even hotter temps then back then and it's running fine

Guess it shows how important it is to do your coolant changes. Thanks for the info!

Unless you threw a rod I bet you can fix if for less than another engine swap. Probably under 500 dollars. Just make sure the heads isn't warped (rarely).

And, most importantly, it's a MAXIMA.
