need to replace ac compressor...

ok. so i finally figured out that i need to replace ac compressor due to the bearing making unpleasant noise. the mechanic told me that the dealer sells new compressors for $410 and that the labor will be around $200 with ac recharging. does this sound right? can i get this compressor cheaper? i know that AutoZone sells them in rebuilt for $250 but they don't have any in stock and cannot order them either.

I bought mine from my local Nissan dealer for $340 dollars. Courtesy Nissan (www.courtesyparts.com) had them for about the same price. I think that the one he is talking about is a rebuilt one like the one I bought otherwise it would be alot more. I believe that I paid about $150 to have mine put in, that included the checking of leaks, and recharging of the system.

Could you please explain the noise and when it does it. When I have my heat on I hear a fast ticking/clicking noise. Seems like it is comming from underneath the glove box.

no mine is different. it comes from the "driving belts section". and you can defenetely tell that its the bearing. the noise is always there, higher you rev the engine more noise you get. so the compressor is fine, it's just the bearing that spins it.

vsamoylov: used or new?

well, i don't think i'm gonna save much if i go with you. like i said junk yards here sell them for around $100-$130 with warranty (from 180 days to 1 year) and free shipping.

You need to change your compressor ASAP. My compressor was once making a weird sound. I was shopping around for a better price a couple days after it was diagnosed. the compressor froze, but the the tensioner and another pulley kept spinning and got warped. the belts all shredded and needed to be replaced. very expensive. I suspect if your bearings are warped...they will eventually lock up. good luck

My compressor locked up too, white smoke everywhere. I thought my engine blew up. Keep your ac off as much as possible till you fix it.

it's been going on for couple of weeks now. i keep the ac off. and the machanic said that it could lock up, but then i would just have to replace the belts also ( + towing i guess)

i already bought the compressor with 1 year warranty shipped to door for $120. it's in my state but still will take 2-3 days to deliver.

can you disconnect the ac compressor by taking the belt off? or does it have something else running on the same belt?

When that belt breaks, you lose your Alt. so no more juice to your battery. I drove 40 miles without a belt so you shouldn't need a tow if it happens.
