ecu upgrade question for 97 maximas

I have a 97 auto se and I am about to do the ecu upgrade. I have located a place with several ecus for a 96 auto se, but they called me and asked for the numbers off of my 96 ecu. The problem is, I don't have a 96 ecu, I have a 97, and he told me that I need to give him the numbers so he can send me the right one. Will I see problems if I get a bad match? I thought that all I needed was to get one from a 96 auto se. What should I tell him?

Also if you have ABS, you need an ABS ecu. Match up the manual or auto! yo tell me how that ecu upgrade goes i got a 97 auto. Post some review when ya get it installed.

yeah they will ask for the numbers so that their not held liable for you getting one that is not compatible with your car.
I had that issue a while back. Even though I would tell them that I needed an ECU for a 5 speed 96 maxima that wasnt enough.
Just give them the part number from an ecu thast matches your tranny code
This is a number for an auto 96 SE ecu..
A18-C85-EYI
You can use a 5 speed ecu also...
A18C84EY0

I think that auto can use 5 speed but not the other way around.
Thank you for the codes, as soon as I get the ecu in the mail, I will send it to JWT.
Does this change for with and without ABS like MaxGordon mentioned?

There is no input for ABS on a 96 ecu.

There are however 7 for TCM (transmission control module). The auto will run in a 5 speed, but you will have multiple codes.

Here are a few numbers for 5 speed 96 ecus

A18-C84 EY0
A18-C84 EX8
A18-H92 E4B
A18-E65 EZ7
A18-L01 0E2

The EZ7 has a speed limiter. The EY0 does not. I do not know about the others.

Both numbers I posted are from SE's so they both have no speed limiters.

OK, I will have them check out the numbers and make sure that I am getting the right one. I can't wait, I have been reading about the MEVI+ecu for so long now and it is finally time. I guess the next step is getting some wings 'cause it's gonna fly!
Thanks again for all your help.

manual tranny maximas can use the auto ecu , but the auto cannot use the manual ecu ! match up your trim and transmission with the ecu you are looking to buy. once you get the ecu you can plug it up and take a test drive and see if you throw any codes. if you do you can check them to see what they are. once i was sent an auto ecu for my 97 manual maxima. i saw the cels and checked them and i had a slew of auto tranny codes and thought, wow this place sent me an automatic ecu. it worked of course but i wanted a manual ecu, and later got my hands on one. checked that one out and all was well.

i had good luck with this place:

LKQ of Atlanta
(800) 775- 2710
paid: $100

You can use this website to check your codes:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html

VBX Maxima also has a ecu decoder which is neat or you can scroll through these:

I just received an ECU, the number is a18-c85-ex9. Are these numbers from a 96 auto se? Because I purchased an ecu before for my car and had lots of problems with it and it had these numbers. So is there any way to check where this ecu came from?
