CV Joint replacement

Its time to replace my cv joints. Is this a repair that I should go to the dealership for or would it be ok to get it done at a shop. About how much should it cost? thanks

Are you talking about the whole CV axle?If so,it's not that hard to change depending on which side. The driver side is shorter and easier. The Passsenger is harder due to the bolts that hold the axle to a bracket in the middle of the shaft.Rust and corrosion makes the job an extra half hour.

the car is making a clicking sound when I turn. The Rubber boot around the passenger side is seperated and not attached anymore. Can I continue to drive on this? I dont know if it needs the whole axle replaced or just the bearing?

You need to change the whole axle, it's easier then replacing just the joint. You can drive with it, but change it very soon. If the joint breaks apart, your stuck.

Duct tape? I thought I heard it all.

You can keep driving on the joint the way it is for a short while. It will eventually seize.

Any shop can do it. They might rip you off on the part so ask if you can buy your own axle and get them to install it.

Axles cost about 60-100 for the part if you get a rebuilt one. A new one will cost about 200 max. Most, if not all axles come with a lifetime warranty.

Its not a hard job if you want to do it yourself. the hardest part is getting the center bearing free and loosening the axle bolt on the spindle.

Good luck

I got my replacement from raxles.com, and the quality and price were great. I think they had some special for maxima.org members as well. I would def get the parts from them and then get a shop to install it, or do it yourself.

I will be replacing my driver side one very soon as it needs to be done.Sadly I've been driving around for about a year with a broken driver side boot. Made about 6-8 SAV>ATL trips, I hear noises from the axles sometimes but generally its quite but It doesnt feel right over bumpy surfaces.

so the install you just need the new axle any seals? any specials tools besides break bars and/or air tools, and rubber hammer?

Get it changes as soon as possible, dont want to be found on road dead like certain cars we know. . . .

Deezy. I need to change my drivers side axle too. If you want, we can probably do it together. i have the tools. Thinking about getting an axle from Advance Auto Parts on Montgomery cross roads. 59.99

Get in touch with me if you want to do this. I live on the south side.

Wow you still live in Savannah?! Sweet sound great, I'm was going to get an axle from advanced also, they have some in stock (according to my search online).

I was going to do a big car day this week some time, CF Hood, sparks, fuel fitler, oil, SS clutch line.

I just bought a 3 foot break bar for the job, and need a couple more tools. what day is good for you?

Axles are easier than most people think. The axle nut is hard to get off but a little knowledge of leverage goes a long ways.I use the jack bar and put it over the 3/4" socket wrench and step on it.I do alot of fixings myself along with my brothers and dad.So very few services are at the shop.Plus I get Napa discounts so I save on stuff and labor.
