Automatic Customized Cluster? Pics Included..

Hello everyone. I don't know if this has been discussed before, so please don't flame. After removing my guage cluster yesterday, I noticed something strange. Inbetween the speedometer and tachometer, there is an empty vertical space, which looks like it can be custom fitted with a lighted, gear-corresponding "PRND21".

Take a look:

Does anyone know if this has been done before? What are the complexities involved in doing something like this? I do realize that the It would give the automatic Maxima more of a luxury feel, as seen in some of the upper-tier cars. Thanks for your time guys.

-Maurice

matt_nz was looking for me a few weeks back but never got back to me on prices and with pictures. he said there were different models so he had to check them out. it wasn't too much money, i think $27 or so US dollars. maybe we can get a group buy to save on shipping costs...

Yeah, I was thinking they'd have to be, because the placement is PERFECT. It even has the notch(es) on the back for the light bulbs. I don't think this should be that hard to do..

Well an easy way, that can definately be done is just drilling 6 holes and sticking LEDs in each of them and whatever one you're on stay lit up. Sorta like what Araffio did. Sure it wouldn't look as nice as having PRND21, but it would be real complicated I think to make/cut them out down the middle of the cluster. Whatever way tho, I'm down to support the project as I would love to have something there, whether letters/numbers or just LEDs.

Hmmm...what if you drilled larger holes and had small, solid stickers made up with a clear P R N D 2 1 and stuck them on a piece of plastic, then placed the plastic either in or behind the hole with an LED behind each hole (not popping through the hole like Araffios did) wouldn't this shine onto the letter and therefore making it visible through the hole?

I'm just concerned about how the LEDs/Lights would receive the proper signal as to what gear the car is currently in..

my moms 97 pathfinder se actually has what looks like a display for the PRND21 but nothing shows up, i guess pathfinders elsewhere in the world have this too. its like nissan hides these little things in our cars just so we can get a peak or feel jealousy over other nissans in other countries.

Yes, close enough, but I'd definitely change out those orange bulbs. It looks like a bunch of CELs! Now, tell us how you did it

Has anyone tried getting a hold of Matt_NZ, or whatever his name is? I think he might be the only one to help us out, as far as getting the OEM (Cefiro?) parts. If not, we will have to make them ourselves..

From what I've read on this thread, it looks like there are 6 people down, including me, so far. If Kevlo911 and Maximazation are down, that'd be 8 so far.

I would first put some bulbs in the sockets you showed on the back side and see if they light up with the corresponding gears. If they do the rest is pretty easy. Just cut out the area on the front side then get some thin clear lexan. If you have white gauges the get some white paint and get some stick on letters & #'s for the P R N D 2 1. Place the stickers on the lexan and spray paint the lexan, when the paint dries and you peel off the stickers the letters and numbers will be clear and then you can put whatever color bulbs you want behind them. If anyone does this let me know how it turned out.

if i remember right, if you look at the contacts for the bulbs and follow the copper trail to where the harness plugs in and look at the corisponding position on the harness itself, it doesnt have a wire there, if i remember right...
someone prove me wrong, this would be cool

Just went outside and swapped the bulbs from the indicator lamps to there. Switched the gears down the line, PRND21, and nothing. Not one lit up. Perhaps the indicator bulb sockets aren't supposed to go there, because they were noticeably harder to snap into place.. I have the cluster right here on my desk - trying to decipher this. BTW, I just realized what you were talking about, Kevlo, about them being pre-wired I also noticed it says PRND21 right on the back of the cluster, where the holes are.. I'll post as soon as I think of anything else.

Are the autos really pre wired? I know that the harness for my 98 does not have the extra wires. I never looked at my 96. If they are then you need some bulbs & holders and that different gauge cover. The 5th gens have these stock...as do may other car companies. I bet some one can figure it out using Rob's manumatic wire diagrams.
http://www.rcreations.com/manumatic/ its has 1st, 2nd and Drive....the park/neutral switch is one more...and for reverse you could use the reverse light wire. simple enough!

BTW mine are red and for the security light.

you guys are going to have to wire then up to nuetral/park switch which is on the tranny. or you guys could wire them up maybe i think from the letters that are on the shifter. but anybody tried to use the 2k cluster? that has letters in it. just giving out ideas sincei no longer have a auto.

Yeah, we'll probably have to end up tapping into the wires from the shifter itself. I am more than willing to do this if someone with a better electrical background helps me out. As for the cluster, take a look at these pics I took. They might clarify some questions...

here are pics of a 2k maxima cluster. it might help you guys. its for sale if anybody want to experiment with it. mileage on it is like 6k or something close to it. it will fit into the 4th gen max casue same form as the 5.5 gen cluster which i have in my car now. wiring is the only problem you have to face.

When I took the gauge cluster out of my parts car I noticed this too. A few people including Jsutter and Arrafio IIRC have put LEDs in there. It is a really good spot to put shift lights for 5 speeds.

Yes it is bright as heck, but like I said its for the security light. When the key is in the 'ON' position they dont light up. Im sure Araffio went blind at night with his. For the gear selector it would be wise to use a much dimmer light.

Looking at this pic of the back, its missing the diodes.

So more work is needed. No simple plug and play.

I have seen the covers on ebay, such as Willams. It would work perfect for the finished look. I would say cut the stock part, get the 2000 letters, wire up some bulbs, and use that cover thing.
