what should i clean/fix etc after long use?

hey guys...

i got 255km on it,
first id like to say that we got a 96 maxima that my dad bought in 96 and we've only changed knock sensor, brakes, tires, o2 sensor, oil, sparkplugs and thats it believe it or not...on a full tank of gas i just completed 375-390 miles, mostly highway but city too, im guessing that aint bad? this is why i love my maxima, it takes abuse and it doesnt play games with me

so i wanna ask u guys, wat should i do to my maxima? replace air filter, fuel filter, (im replacing absolute pressure sensor), change oil, clean throttle body, after these processes, should my maxima be all swell? god damnit it deserves it lol
any other things u guys got to suggest?

also, is this the where the fuel filter is located?...

thnx in advance guys

The fuel filter is located at the very back of the engine bay, I'd say behind the throttle body. It is attatched to a clamp that holds it in place. I'll try to find the write-up I used..

So does this mean in 9 years you've never replaced the air or fuel filter?

I trust your dad had the air filter and the fuel filter replaced a number of times or the car probably would have been abandoned on the side of the road before or his fuel economy would have suffered so badly he would have looked into it.

It strikes me that all the fluids should be checked and replaced if necessary: eg. power steering, transmission, radiator, clutch (if it has one).

Tire condition? Brake condition? Condition of hoses/belts? That vehicle needs some TLC. You could eat off the engine of my 95SE, but yours should be condemned, lol!

the air filter maybe, the fuel filter he definetely hasnt changed and im guessing thats why it sometimes doesnt start on a blue moon...fluids have been checked...brake and tires have been taken care of, hoses and belts no...
hey, i also got 620 km on a full tank of gas...im guessing thats why my dad never looked into the fuel filter...
but that first pic i posted definetely is the fuel filter right? is it a job that a noob like me can do according to the sticky posted about it?
(u guys know the part number for it so i cand find it at canadian tire)

Yes, that drum-like object in that absurdly disgusting Maxima is the fuel filter. You'll need to remove the fuse that controls the fuel pump, fuse 32 (blue 15 amp fuse), and start the car until it stalls about 10 times or so. The reason for this is so that all (most) of the pressure from the fuel lines is released, otherwise you'll NEVER take the top/bottom hose off the filter. Oh, BTW - get a 1996 300ZX filter. Because of the greater surface area, it will last a few thousand miles more than a Maxima filter, and it's about the same price (~$12). Good luck!

Yes, it's exactly the same thing, except it's a little wider. The hoses fit right in.

... that is horrible... please clean it

Would Autozone sell the 1996 300zx fuel filter for 12 bucks? Cause I am not sure if mine has been changed.. and im only gettin 250ish miles to a tank, so ima go but a new filter.

I bought mine at NAPA, which has slightly higher prices, so I'm sure it'll be the same/slightly lower. As for replacing the fuel filter, it will not enhance your MPG. If you want better gas mileage, try buying a K&N air filter, cleaning your throttle body, IAC valve, oil change, new spark plugs, etc.

Mr. Greek:

I'm somewhat confused (story of my life, lol). Does the car have 255,000 miles on it or 255,000 kilometres on it. Wondering because you refer to 255km which is kilometres as far as I'm concerned, but its a New York vehicle. I still don't believe that the fuel filter has never been changed. Has the vehicle never been serviced at a stealership since day 1, even during the warranty period?

I just did mine, remove the gas cap in the rear because the tank is pressurized and even removing the fuse and running it till it dies it will still have pressure in the tank and run out the bottom hose. Another thing, I fiddled around with the bottom scew and cut my hands to pieces on the airbox. Then I removed the two clamps between the TB and air cleaner (a 3 minute job) and got right to the screw. Also makes putting on the new one much easier.

So you have more like 158,500 miles on the car. Didn't your dad keep the maintenance records for the car?

And 375 - 390 mostly highway miles on a tank of gas is nothing to write home about. I have had as high as 550 on the highway and routinely can get over 500 on straight highway driving if I don't drive it like I stole it.

yeah, after an oil change, I usually and s.t.p. fuel injector cleaner to my 96 GXE (74,000) miles. and I've noticed that my ingine is smoother and more powerful afterwords! Just remember, fuel injector cleaner should be added after oil changes!

Pulled from the FAQ's-

2) Fuel filter. The fuel filter is small gray cylinder on the back of the firewall that is to be changed on a 60k service interval. It is often to blame for bad gas mileage, but can be a pain in the butt to change, but it can be done. The filter is relatively cheap from Nissan. Some members reccomend buying a fuel filter for a Nissan 300ZX. Its the same size hoses, but twice the size, so it lasts 2x longer and is doubly effective. The choice is up to you. The writeup to change the filter can be found here: www.maximadriver.com

I call BS to adding the fuel injector cleaner after an oil change. I have recently read that using Chevron Techron fuel additive can affect the viscosity of the oil and should be used just before a scheduled oil change.
