speedometer accuracy

How accurate is the speedometer with stock rims? (15" sawblade) I have a GPS which tells you your speed and when the car speedo says 80, the GPS says I am only going 74. Has anyone else experienced this?

I would take the speedos word for it. I have a 95SE (5-speed) and I believe its bang on. Have you changed wheels and tires? If so, that might have something to do with it.

That's acutally good, makes you go 5 mile slower, so you won't get pulled over if you going 60 mile.

GPS might have a Delay that's why you see that.

It doesn't matter the size of the wheel, as long as you match it up with a tire of similar diameter,... what's your tire size?

Didn't notice you still have the sawblades on. OEM tires for that wheel are 215-60-15.
Have you gone to a slightly wider tire?

[QUOTE=sbddude] How accurate is the speedometer with stock rims? (15" sawblade) Not dead on

Not, I don't have a GPS, and I've accepted that all readings on the stock 4g and 5g Maxima dash aren't very accurate.

speedo accuracy decreases with increases in MPH. On the car and driver page for 95 (the max was car of the year) it said at 70 the speedo could be off as much as 5mph

The GPS determines speed based on satelite tracking only. It is a handheld unit. My observation was done at a constant speed with cruise on so refresh rate is not an issue. The GPS self-reports accuracy to be 10-15 ft. It also is consistent with those signs that tell you how fast you are going.

i doubt the gps is that accurate... i'm a civil engineering student and i work for a civil engineer and our gps equipment that costs well over 50,000 dollars is far from acurate...so i doubt i would trust your gps speed over your speedo with stock tires on there

There is a speed checker (best way to describe it) on the belt parkway and when I pass it- it is dead on with my speedo

I have found in the past that the best way to check your speed is when you get pulled over. Just ask the cop how fast he clocked you and see if it matches up.

Mine is about 4 kph faster on the speedo than on Garmin eTrex GPS, but that one is not too precise...if somebody has a WAAS-enabled GPS those should be quite accurate.

By the way, I was asking for the link to the car and driver article about the max being car of the year, not the one about speedometers. I am not oblivious.

Take a stopwatch. Go on the highway on an uncrowded day, and look for the mile marker signs. Time one mile going an exact speed on your speedo, do this three times. Go back home and sec/mile into miles/hour. If you have any skills, you should find you get a very accurate number.

Tire inflation pressure, exact tire size, and built-in speedo error all can affect what your speedo says, and IMO it's worth knowing exactly how it reads.

You can safely assume that any handheld GPS receiver is far, far more accurate than your car's speedometer. WAAS doesnt matter in this case.
