Squeal when braking...

This just started a couple nights ago. Whenever I brake with moderate pressure, I get this horrible metal-on-metal sounding squeal. It sounds like it is coming from my passenger front wheel. This only happens after about 10mins of driving when everything is warmed up. It starts to squeal like a stuck pig when I turn right while braking. It sounds like crap!!!

About three weeks ago I replaced all four calipers with reman. ones from Autozone and put in SS brake lines. The front pads/rotors are Hawk HPs (new) with brembo blanks. The rear is axxis ultimate with slotted rotors.

I'm going to break everything down tomorrow and see what I can find out. Any particular things I should look at? Also, I forgot to get some of that 'quiet stop' lube for the back of the pads, so I think I'm gonna pick up some of that and squirt some on.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
drew

Skip the quiet stop and go for a new set of shims (hardware kit)

Thats what I was thinking, but I think the Hawks have shims on the back of them and if I remember correctly I went ahead and put OEM shims on top of that. Should I take those off?

since they are relatively new, what about them breaking in? it may just be a layer of the pad...

I would think they have been broken in already... I mean it has been about 3 weeks and I did the bedding in procedure too.

no, thanks for posting though!

I know someone has to have an answer for me...

I also talked to a mechanic last night and he said that it could be my wheel bearing? Why would it just all of a sudden start squealing, don't wheel bearings usually start out with a lower sound and then work up to the squeal when the go bad? I think I would have noticed this before as I hear every little rattle my car makes.

If your pads are one of those "lifetime warranty" pads they are usually super hard and will squeal for the life of the pad.

I learned that from Bobby Licas Car Clinic on TV.

bump...

Alright, I took apart the brake on the passenger side today and found out that the grease in the slider pin valves was dry as a bone!!! I just replaced all of this about 3 weeks ago.

I scraped what little grease was left out and put in some 'valve lubricant and sealer' that came with the caliper brackets (or torque member, i think).

Here is the grease I used:

Valvoline Multipurpose

I'm assuming this is not the correct type since I just noticed that it withstands only up to 275 degrees. Don't brakes get about twice that hot?

Sooo, this probably means that my squealing is coming from my new warped rotor. Is this a fair assumption? Is it even worth the money to try and get it turned, or should I just fork over the bones for a new rotor?

Someone please let me know something...

Thanks

My max did this not too long ago but mine was due to a tiny tiny rock that got behind the brakepad somehow?? Wish I could help you out somehow...but yes brakes do get hotter than 275...I head that on Shadetree Mechanic...

Thanks for the reply 96greengle.

I think I have a stock rotor out in the shed I might just put on and see what happens. I can just put on one side, right? Or do I have to put both stock ones back on (drivers & passenger)? Also, what grease are you supposed to use for these caliper pins then? I have more of this valve lubricant stuff that came with them, but I would like to know for the future.

I just don't understand why it only starts squealing when I turn the wheel right and brake?!? And it only starts after about 5-10 mins of driving. I guess it gets warped when it heats up?!?

Alright, today I worked on this and put stock rotors back on. I have no friggin clue what to look at next. The squeal is still there. Like I said before, it starts after the rotors are warmed up about 5-10mins of driving. Only under moderate brake pressure. Non-existant at light and heavy pressure.

This is really starting to **** me off, anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,
drew

I'm just glad I'm not the only one... Thanks for the free bump

I would like to find out what it might be so I can fix it if it's not something major.

Hrrrmmm...

Mine have been squeaking since new, mech took off the pads and bevelled all the edges with his bench grinder, apparantly the edges can get too sharp and create the noise, this worked for about a week, never bothered to do it again, I assume it depends on how far down you grind. They still sqeual but PAREDLINE is probably right about those "real hard" pads.

**UPDATE**

Ok, I went and got her checked out at a shop. The guy test drove it and came back and said that the squealing was from crystallized pads on the passenger front wheel. I guess crystallized is the same as glazed. He also said that the vibration in my brake pedal was 30% from the rear rotors being out of round and 70% from the front.

So I guess I'm going to just get them all turned cause I can't afford to replace everything for a second time...

Question: Does anyone know if you can do anything to salvage crystallized pads? I really hate to fork over more money unless I really need to. Can I sand/grind them down or anything?
