o2 sensor and CEl light situation
I replaced what I thought was my bad o2 sensor sometime back and the CEL came back on after resetting the ecu. So I assume that I replaced the wrong sensor. I was never able to definitivly pinpoint which sensor it was. Anyway, I just ordered another sensor off of courtesy parts. This time I ordered rear sensor that comes after the cat. The one I replaced was the one of the drivers side arm of the y pipe that plugs in near the firewall.
Here is my question: I was at the dealership today and was told by them, and the guys at another dealership, that after getting a new sensor that Nissan would have to reset my ecu or the light would remain on. I told them that i reset it by manual and they said that that wasnt sufficient. WHo is right? is my cel still on because i replaced the wrong o2 sensor, or is it still on because Nissan didnt official reset my ecu with their "special equipment"?

you can reset your ecu via the method in the stickies (with a flat head) and that IS sufficient.
But if you feel the need to have it reset my another method than that, then go to advanced auto parts and have them scan and reset your ecu for free.

Since I have a 99 it is nearly impossible to reset using the screw driver method. I had my sensor installed at a local shop and they reset it with a little palm device, though i have reset it myself before by unhooking the battery. I know that these methods work, but the guys at the dealership today were trying to convince me that they had to reset, because i didn't have the capability to erase all the old codes just by unhooking the battery.

Wait - dstyle, What O2 sensor did u replace? What code was comming up? Because i replaced my O2 sensor the one that connects close to the radiator. I am not 100% sure if that is the "front right heated O2 sensor" because i am still getting the code even after i reset my ecu. Do you know witch O2 sensor is the front right? I have heard that i should leave my neg side of my battery cable off over night and this way when i start my car my ecu will realize how tight the o2 sensor is on and adapt to it. (I am not sure if that was bs or what..)

there's been a couple of times i needed to reset my cel. i know some people that are technicians at the local honda dealership and they always have used the palm device. they also said that if the light comes on within 50 miles than the problems not fixed, long story short, if they used the palm device to reset the cel then it will clear out all of the codes

Well they used the palm device, so i am convinced that I still have a bad o2. I replaced the one that plugs in by the firewall. It hooks into the drivers side arm of the y pipe. I replaced that and the light is still on. So today I bought the "rear 02 sensor" that plugs in behind the cat. I have a 99 so it is a ***** to get the correct codes because they arent on the courtesy web site. Dave B used a laptop and hooked it into my ecu to find the dead sensor before I replaced the first one. It didnt give a definitive responce on where exactly the sensor was located, so we thought it was the one that i replaced. I assume we just chose the wrong one.
